Very similar style in many ways, and both from around the same time period. You should enjoy the writing, setting, time period and characters.

Both of these served to popularize something for a lot of people that aren't normally subjects in anime, and really helped to increase interest in them, while also having good stories, etc.

Although the stories are quite different (fantasy "magical girl" Hime-chan vs. real-world "miracle girl" Yawara-san), these two anime share a number of qualities. They are old-school hand-drawn anime, with a strong cast of characters, and they both focus on the difficulties of being young and female and subjected to all the expectations of other people, while still being in the dark about one's own hopes and dreams.

Both anime series are "old school" cel-based sports-related dramas that feature female protagonists who have above-average athletic skills yet have ordinary lives to lead as well.
