Gravitation

As a member of a musical duo on the verge of making it into show business, Shindou Shuichi has a lot on his mind -- especially since he writes the songs for his Bad Luck band. His life gets no less hectic when he bumps into Yuki Eiri, a successful yet cynical author extraordinaire, who immediately insults Shuichi’s lyrics upon reading them. These two anime might not be the most intuitive to link with Gravitation being a shounen-ai landmark, and Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge a (a)typical shojo. But I am 110% convinced that if you liked one of them you will like the other.

They share humor and way of presenting and using characters. They use the same kind of animation and effects (small frustrated chibis anyone?). And both have a light way of presenting darker subjects.

All this together gives two anime that make you feel the same way when you watch them, but do not share plot elements, setting, or character ideas. Thus making both fun to watch even if you see them back to back.

Midori Days

Midori Days

Sawamura Seiji is the most notorious delinquent at his high school -- always getting into fights and causing problems, leaving him single and unlucky with the ladies. After another long day of rejection, Seiji discovers that the love of his life might have finally appeared, but in the unlikeliest of places... his right hand?! Now, in addition to dealing with daily fights and the gossip of his classmates, Seiji must handle a new problem of embarassing proportions: Kasugano Midori, a pretty young girl in place of his hand, who happens to have fallen in love with him!

Midori Days has a more of romance-based plot than Yamato in my opinion, but it's funny and cute all the same. Both have the kind of animation I appreciate and a weird/uncomfortable circumstance that sets things in motion.

Honey and Clover

Honey and Clover

Art college: cradle of romance, home of bittersweet moments. Takemoto is struggling to find his direction in life, while his roommates Morita and Mayama are moving confidently - or recklessly - towards their goals. Enter Hagu-chan, the childlike and beautiful prodigy whom everyone admires; and thus the love triangles begin. Together, the trio explore the pain of first love, the trials of romantic conflict, and our loyalty to those annoying people who happen to be our closest friends.

Who says that friends can't be family? It's the memories that we don't even realize we're making that can pull us out of the darkest places. Both Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge and Honey and Clover prove this in their own unique way.

Aishiteruze Baby

Aishiteruze Baby

Whenever Kippei is at school, he has one thing on his mind: girls. From skipping class to cheesy lines, he'll do anything it takes to reel the ladies in, though he never seems to find the right person. But the bachelor lifestyle is soon to change when young Yuzuyu enters the picture. This five-year-old cutie has been abandoned by her mother, and is to be taken care of by none other than Kippei! Unfortunately for the both of them, Kippei has no experience raising a child, so the learning curve will be quite steep...

An unconventional recommendation, I know. Aishiteruze Baby is a cute and dramatic tale, whereas Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge is a pseudo-dark and funny series. Yet, the plots hold a similar twist as the adults in each series seek to change the ways of the main hero/heroine. Sometimes, though, it just takes someone to accept you as you are to start the real metamorphosis.

Seto no Hanayome

Seto no Hanayome

While visiting his hometown, junior high school student Michishio Nagasumi's life was changed forever when he nearly drowned. Though he was saved by a mermaid named San, there’s a catch -- her family is part of a merfolk mafia, and they abide by a strict rule: If a mermaid is discovered by a man, either he or the mermaid must die. That is, unless the man marries into the family! Faced with such a decision, Nagasumi can only oblige their customs and become a "happy" newlywed. Now, with a new school year around the corner, Nagasumi must find a way to deal with his new bride, keep her true nature a secret, and most importantly, escape inevitable death at the hands of San's over-protective father’s gang!
