Following his near-fatal accident, Watanuki is returning to his normal routine of working at Yuuko's shop and arguing with Doumeki. However several people had to pay the price for saving him that day, and he is determined to show them all his gratitude - including Doumeki's deceased grandfather, Haruka. Unsure of how to repay someone who is no longer part of this world, Watanuki promises Haruka that he will find five items for him. Beginning the search, he meets Doumeki at his grandfather's old warehouse where the first item, an old storybook, is stored. As Watanuki reaches out for the book, he unwillingly brings the tale to life; and when the pair finds themselves running for their lives it becomes clear that fulfilling Haruka's task will be nowhere near as simple as they thought.
It isn't unusual for a person to feel that the world around them is strange and has unexpected secrets lying just beyond their sight. However, for most people this is just an occasional sensation that greets them upon awakening or chases them into sleep. For the mushi researcher Ginko, it isn't a feeling at all; it is a knowledge which guides his travels and motivates his life. Found in the cracks between what is conceivable and what is not, are the varied life forms collectively known as mushi. They surround us and affect us, but their intensely different nature makes them unrecognizable to most. Ginko brings these life forms into perspective for the lives of those most affected and most in need of an explanation.
If you liked the spiritual aspect of xxxHolic Shunmuki, then you may enjoy the mysterious nature of the Mushi in Mushishi. Both focus on supernatural phenomena, so if you liked that in Shunmuki, then it's worth giving Mushishi a try.
When people dream, they express their utmost desires and emotions within the confines of their mind; but when their strong emotions cross the border into reality, the dream can turn into an uncontrollable nightmare. Touko and Rinko are sisters known as "yume tsukai" (dream users), and their job is to take care of these nightmares. Using toys as weapons, the girls must both destroy the nightmare and return the dream to its rightful owner before the nightmare does any sort of serious damage. Have no fear, Touko and Rinko are here!
Frequently mystical, and always cute and comical, both xxxHolic and Yume Tsukai are easy shows to get along with. Predominantly episodic, both feature a relatively small cast and the daily misfortunes they encounter and the way they overcome this.
If you want some frivilous fun, both of these will appeal to the same audience.
