Can't compete with bikes! The protagonists of both movies have big black and powerful two-wheeled vehicles that leave you wondering "If I had that bike..."

And yes, both have stunning haircuts as well.

For animated movies that push the envelope of CGI you can't get much better than Wonderful Days and FF: Advent Children. Even If you don't care for either story just watch and stare in complete awe at the absolutely stunning CGI scenery and your time will still be well spent.

Wonderful Days combines stunning 3D CGI animation with a compelling storyline, and the same can be said about Ghost in the Shell.

If you liked the cool animation and mysterious plot of Wonderful Days, then Ghost in the Shell is for you.

What I love about these anime is the amazing details, scenery, and music. They immerse you into a future which is both chilling and possible, and explore the lengths to which humans may stray from their humanity. Wonderful Days features man against nature, while Ghost in the Shell throws man against machine, but the conflict is similar, well structured, and breath-taking till the end. Fascinating in both shape and content, these anime are masterpieces of the same genre.

Akira

Akira
  • Movie (1 ep x 125 min)
  • 1988

Following the disaster wrought upon the world by a mysterious being called ‘Akira’, Neo Tokyo is now in social and economic turmoil. In such a decaying city, feisty Kaneda and his shy friend Tetsuo survive by running around in a biker gang, chasing local rivals and generally evading the police. Everything changes, however, when Tetsuo crashes into a strange-looking boy during a bike chase and the military ends up taking him away. When he eventually returns to his friends, he’s no longer the same weak little boy they always knew – in fact, a military experiment has turned him into something beyond human imagination. While the military is intent on reclaiming its specimen at any cost, Tetsuo is sick of being bullied around and is about to show everyone, including his friend Kaneda, exactly who is boss.

Both set in post apocalyptic worlds in survivor cities using advanced animation with a blend of 2d and 3d animation. They involve the viewer in intricate conspirisies and thrilling action scenes whilst emercing them in the depth of character with a romantic twist.

Watch the original film first - or not - but if you're big on cyberpunk style and not so keen on substance this movie should satisfy you amptly even if Wonderful Days did not.
