Honey and Clover

Honey and Clover

Art college: cradle of romance, home of bittersweet moments. Takemoto is struggling to find his direction in life, while his roommates Morita and Mayama are moving confidently - or recklessly - towards their goals. Enter Hagu-chan, the childlike and beautiful prodigy whom everyone admires; and thus the love triangles begin. Together, the trio explore the pain of first love, the trials of romantic conflict, and our loyalty to those annoying people who happen to be our closest friends.

NHK and H&C are both slice of life series, were we see the characters deal with the everyday (and perhaps not so everyday) hardships and joys of their respective lives.

In these two series you will se good a character and plot development, a comic twists to the stories and realistic romance.

buu

Both Honey and Clover and Welcome to the NHK have main characters that are just outrageously funny and lighthearted. Both have a drama element that is blown out of proportion. If you like this type of wacky humor, then these match up.

ackguy

Both animes explore the pivotal young adult years (as opposed to high school) and the societal pressures that come with it. Poignant, funny, and inspiring, the two shows contain characters that are all broken in some way that are easy to empathize with. Sub themes of failure, the importance of little achievements, and friendship make for fantastic and unique stories.

Whilst hunting for a place to live the two Nanas again cross paths. They decide to share a flat and become best friends in no time. Nana is like Welcome to the NHK with a fourth of the laughs and four times the feminity, however both deal with relatively identical concepts. In either story, the characters have to come face to face with reality and realize that life is never perfect, and learn how to be happy. Either can be a soul-shredding but ultimately enlightening experience.

eaper

These series each focus on many individuals getting used to society, learning what it takes to get by in life. Each series has a lot of character development and and are very emotional having the ability to cause a lot of growth and realization in the viewer as well.

satomi

Both animes deal with people facing real life problems. They are very close to reality I find. These are the series you won't be able to quit in the middle. They just keep you tied down in front of the computer until the very end! In both animes we see a beautiful friendship develop, rather it's between the 2 Nanas or Sato and Yamazaki. It's impossible not to get close to the characters, whether it's for their choices or personalities. If you like one of the shows you certainly won't regret watching the other.

Both Rec and Welcome to the NHK are interesting and are aimed at adults. I can't name any other similarities, but it doesn't mean that there aren't any. Keep in mind that Rec lacks Welcome to The NHK!-like drama, though it has a lot of romantic comedy elements, which NHK only has from time to time. Still, you should give this title a try.

freakzilla

Welcome to the NHK goes a lot deeper as the story goes on, but just like Rec there are a lot of romantic comedy aspects which provide some good laughs, but keep the anime fairly serious. Both are great anime is you want to take a break from all the plot-filled anime, but still want something serious to watch.

worosei

For some reason, both have a similar 'feel'. They're quite different animes, of different themes, and purpose. However both deals with how people cope with life in general; NHK - Satou being a hikikomori, Hitomi as a civil servant , REC - Aka as a new seiyu and Matsumaru as a fledging salaryman.

Both are romances, REC more openly, and the characters are similar.

Aka and Misaki are both oddball kind of forward girls younger than the male lead.

Matsumaru and Satou gain inferiority complexes, and both acts relatively cold and harsh at times.

Mainly a recommendation based on the lead's relationships.

XXXHOLiC

XXXHOLiC

Kimihiro Watanuki is cursed with the ability to see evil spirits known as Youkai. Due to this power, the Youkai are attracted to him like a magnet, and each time he is close to being devoured. One day, fate drew him to a strange store and there, he met Yuuko, who was dressed in a very exquisite fashion. As destiny would have it, Yuuko has the ability to save Kimihiro from seeing the Youkai, but for a price: Kimihiro must work for Yuuko by performing chores around the store and other odd tasks, until she deems fit. With his "friend" Doumeki, and his secret crush Himawari, they will discover that the world they live in is nowhere close to ordinary!

Welcome to the NHK! and xxxHolic are very good seinen shows that mix drama and comedy with a bit of romance. Also in both of them the protagonist is rather over reactive. So if you liked one, the other might just suit your taste.

P.S. Just keep in mind that it takes a few episodes for these anime to get really interesting (in the case of NHK! it is 4-5 episodes, while in the case of xxxHolic it is 1-3 episodes).

Sangokagome

Both of these entertaining series have a mystic atmosphere and deal with men who need assistance with their lives, and the women who help them achive it. Wonderfully funny, and just a little bit strange, xxxHolic and NHK are two titles worth checking out.

eaper

Each of these series are extremely funny and have some drama/romance thrown in and are centered around odd guys trying to/getting used to the world they live in (although each world is very different). Finally, the male lead in each is quite crazy and overreacts to almost anything.

Both anime, NHK and B Gata, have a main plot dealing with a certain subject, but sort of an underlying social aspect regarding young male-female interaction, and the plight of a young undersexed boy/girl coming to understand their emotions.

While not dealing with the same core subjects, I believe there is quite a bit of core intrest overlap between the series'.

Jdogtoocool

Similarities between Welcome to the NHK and Yamada's First Time:

-both are centered around romance and relationship building

-both use dark humor even though welcome to the NHK uses it far more

-the friends in both series are very supportive

-There's brief nudity in both animes

-Nothing over the top is used, both are very realistic, very slice of life

Basically the only big difference in both animes is the setting; one taking place in a school setting with younger characters and the other in a more mature, adult setting. Other than that if you liked one anime you'll love the other.
