Synopsis:

It is the early 20th century, in a time when Japan was wracked by war and bombings which seem to never end. In order to protect its citizens, the military has sponsored a special academy for young ladies to harness their virgin energy, a special fighting power possessed only by, you guessed it -- virgins. With this newfound power, these bashful women have the power to defend Japan from invaders! That is, as long as they can keep their pureness intact!

Gunbuster

Gunbuster

In the early 21st century, insectoid organisms are invading the galaxy, searching for new stars to house their young. Mankind's only defense lies with space cadets such as Takaya Noriko, daughter of a celebrated admiral killed in battle, and Amano Kazumi, the top of her class. With their skill and the power of the mecha known as GunBuster, the girls must help fight to protect the galaxy from total annihilation...

GunBuster is everything Virgin Fleet isn't -- epic, with a fantastic plot, three dimensional characters, and great music to boot. If you liked Virgin Fleet, you'd surely like GunBuster, which I feel is much better for this type of series. ;)
TheBurningCrow
Both Gunbuster and Virgin Fleet are short ovas. GunBuster is a bit more epic however and a bit more serious as a "possible" future type of show. Virgin Fleet is a bit more.. "cheesy", but the feeling of both series is about the same, and you have a determined female protagonist in each one.

Sakura Wars OVA 1

Sakura Wars OVA 1

Sakura Wars OVA I is the first in a series of productions related to the Sakura Wars games for the Dreamcast. The story takes place in early 20th century Tokyo, whose people rely on steam powered technology. Demons and mechanical beings are increasingly attacking, and must be stopped at all costs. The world's best hope is the Imperial Defense Force - Flower Division, a group of girls with exceptional abilities who must pilot the Spirit Armor -- mechanical shells which help to amplify their powers.

Considering Virgin Fleet seems to be a carbon copy of Sakura Wars (with an even more ridiculous plot), I don't see why you wouldn't like this. Same kind of storyline and feel, with equally as ... "similar" characters.

Stellvia of the Universe

Stellvia of the Universe

It is the year 2356 AD, 189 years after a shockwave from a distant supernova decimated the Earth. Since that fateful day, humanity has begun training for a final mission to protect the planet from the inevitable oncoming 2nd shockwave - a mission whose failure means the annihilation of mankind. For Katase and her friends, their training at the foundation Stellvia is just the beginning of an adventure that could lead to saving the world, or seeing its end...

For a MUCH, MUCH, MUCH better look at the life of school-people trying to protect the planet, check out Stellvia. Also includes a very fantastic plot. Highly recommended if you like the Virgin Fleet type show.
