Princess Tutu

Princess Tutu

Once there lived an eccentric author called Drosselmeyer who wrote grand tragedies - one of them was the tale of a prince who sealed away an evil raven by breaking his own heart into tiny pieces. However, before the story could be completed, the author died and the tale took on a life of its own. Now, in a town where fiction and reality meet, the story continues on its tragic course with Ahiru, a duck who transforms into the beautiful Princess Tutu in order to restore the prince's heart. But will Ahiru's act of love be enough to defy the story's terrible destiny and lead to a happy ending?

Violinist of Hamelin and Princess Tutu have two important things in common. The first is that they both are both tragedies whose tragic elements derive from an exploration of the darker side of human nature. The second is that classical music helps shape their moods. Much classical music is used in these shows and this music is equally important to the characters in these shows.
TheBurningCrow
Both Violinist of Hamelin and Princess Tutu have the same sort of mood. However, Tutu is a bit more mysterious where VoH is a bit more adventurous. Overall I think you'd really like Violinist of Hamelin if you enjoyed Princess Tutu. Another thing that made me think they were similar was the music. Both use classical pieces and ballets instead of your typical techy-jpop.

Violinist of Hamelin and Princess Tutu both have something in common: they are both tragedies, which are very, very based on the musical world. Although VoH is definitely much darker, and less shoujo like Tutu is, I still think you would enjoy both.

Gauche the Cellist

Gauche the Cellist

Goshu is a small-town musician with a passion for playing the cello, and is a dedicated member of the local orchestra. With an important performance in a matter of weeks, the group practices daily to hone their skills. But lately, Goshu's musical ability has been lacking, and to get it back, he must accept help from the unlikeliest of kin -- the furry and feathered friends who dwell on his land...

Goshu the Cellist is MUCH happier than Violinist of Hamelin.. but also is centered around music. It also hails from many years ago, so the animation style is closer in similarity than a newer series. You'll feel much better than VoH after watching this.
TheBurningCrow
If you are a music lover, both of these shows are for you. Hamelin tends to play a lot of famous classical pieces of music, and Goshu the Cellist touches on a lot of classical music as well. Although they both are totally different series, music lovers will enjoy the two.

Scrapped Princess

But the knight who was to kill her could not end the life of a newborn child, and so she lived. Okay... 1. Both main characters possess surreal power beyond those of their peers.. .. but these powers either lay dormant or mostly used neutrally until later in the series. 2. Both involve magical entities beyond the control of "normal" humans. 3. Some of these magical forces are not main characters - they simply *exist* in the world. 4. Both stories have a significant portion of them dedicated to background information near the beginning - the Violinist of Hamelin moreso than Scrapped Princess. 5. Both are "quest" animes with a theme of magic - although the "magic" in Scrapped Princess is more like human/alien warfare the magic in the Violinist of Hamelin is definitely "magic" magic.
TheBurningCrow
At first you may not see why Scrapped Princess is at all like Hameln, or vice versa, but once you are done with both series, you will have a strange hazy feeling like they are connected somehow. Maybe it's the main characters' past, or the fact that they are holding back a huge secret about their role in the grand scheme of things. Don't want to give too much away, so just watch them!

Berserk

Berserk

Born beneath the gallows tree from which his dead mother hung, Guts has always existed on the boundary between life and death. After enduring a terrible childhood, he spends his adulthood in brutal combat, pitting his strength against others in order to build his own. Life is simple enough for Guts until he meets Griffith, the inspirational, ambitious, and beautiful leader of the mercenaries, the Band of the Hawks. When Guts loses to Griffith in a duel, he is forced to join the group, and, despite himself, finds a sense of camaraderie and belonging amongst them. However, as Griffith leads his soldiers from victory to victory, the bloody wars and underhanded politics reveal a side to him that nobody quite expected. Can Guts, a simple warrior, defend those who have come to mean the most to him, all the while struggling not to lose to the darkness he has carried with him his entire life?

I hate to make a trite comparison.... but the "quest" format of the Violinist of Hamelin is not quite like Berserk's... but the concept of Demonic humans who save the world from some overbearing evil is definitely similar. There isn't as much blood... and there is definitely more *active* magic - but the two have a very interesting feeling for them that I just can't shake.

Slayers

Slayers

Meet Lina Inverse, a mighty sorceress who fights evil in the name of... greed, gluttony and black magic?! When she meets Gourry, a swordsman whose skill with the blade is rivaled only by his stupidity, Zelgadis, a grumpy sorceror who's been turned into a golem, and Rezo, a priest known for his benevolence (with a dark secret), you know her adventures are just beginning!

I think the tone in Hamelin is a bit more serious, but the overall adventurous feeling, and the "going to defeat the ultimate bad-guy" plot line is about the same. They are also both funny, although I think Slayers is a bit more of a comedy.
