Martian Successor Nadesico

Martian Successor Nadesico

When Akito Tenkawa went looking for answers about his parents' deaths, he had no idea that he'd be indoctrinated into the spaceship Nadesico not only as a cook, but also as a mecha pilot – a job he wants nothing to do with! Alongside his childhood friend Yurika, stoic Ruri, otaku Gai and other misfit crewmates, Akito and the Nadesico crew find themselves in the middle of a brutal war against both the dreaded Jovian Lizards, and the military itself, who wants the civilian ship under their control...

Dreistul Dreistul says...

Another sci-fi/mecha/comedy series, more oriented toward parody and humor.

kamirura kamirura says...

I would say Nadesico is Vandread's twin. They are really alike. It even got the men/women plot in it. And it takes place on a space ship called Nadesico where men and women have to live together. Check this out if you enjoyed Vandread.

DraconPern DraconPern says...

Great series with the same misfit crew in a One Ship(tm) vs. Everyone Else scenario. Lots of cool mechs and weaponry to light up your enemy in the cold dark space. Add some romantic subplots for good measure, and it becomes a pretty interesting anime. It may start out predictable, but the ending is definitly not.

caweman caweman says...

These two have a lot in common but still differs greatly, they both some ingrediences but are still spiced up in their own way that makes both of them realy enjoyable

Frost Frost says...

Thematic likenesses abound: Both series are about the crew of a space cruiser and the difficulties from within and without. Where Nadesico might focus a bit more on character depth and their development, Vandread has more action - although both series have their share of between-character intrigue.

Yenya Yenya says...

Both Vandread and Nadesico share the space settings, the romantic relations between the two main characters, some mecha/action scenes, and both are "space operas" (this applies also to the 2nd stage of Vandread).

dragonlord dragonlord says...

humorous and space mecha. Just like Nadesico it involves the main character being thrust into a postition of importance and needs to grow into the hero he is inteded to become...

deyo deyo says...

These two are so similar that it's hard to list many differences. They're about a relationship of a young girl and boy where they fight together against an unknown enemy while there are people who stand between them. The only big difference is that VanDread is in a world where men and women live apart from each other (they're enemies).

NekoRocket NekoRocket says...

If you're looking for quirky comedic action with a cast of colorful characters, then look no further than Vandread and Nadesico. Each of these space-based anime feature crews of unusual individuals brought together under strange circumstances. Good for laughs and a whole lot more.

lantis lantis says...

Space Opera Giant Robot Harem anime. Yeah, you heard me. Like Nadesico, Vandread plays on many common anime themes, and delivers a winning combination of unique characters, and on the mark comedy and action. And if anything, Yurika fans will enjoy Dita's single minded boy chasing. Nothing for Ruri fans though....

Asgorath Asgorath says...

Let's see and check for similarities...

Band of complete misfits on a spaceship? Check! Girl completely obsessed with clueless boy? Check! Them vs. everybody else? Check! Giant robot battles? Check! Lots of jokes mixed with action? Check!

And I fear I could go on for quite a while like this. I somehow can not imagine if you like either Nadesico or Vandread that you will not enjoy the other (or if you hate one show you somehow will love the other).

The stories are different enough to not seem like a repeat, but the formula and the general gist of the shows are the same. They are truly sister-shows.

Kastrophee Kastrophee says...

Miisfits who pilot spaceships and mechas, while fighting mysterious aliens/enemies who use AI-controlled ships. If you liked one the other is most likely up your alley , though Vandread is more serious while Nadesico has more humor (so you will most likely end up liking one more then the other, but which one depends on you.)

RedZanmato RedZanmato says...

There are so many similarities in both Vandread and Nadesico: plausible science fiction, a harem style theme, and love. A recommendation in words does the two no good.

SmugDude SmugDude says...

Nadesico is a total must watch for any Vandread fans. Both series take place in a futuristic space world and involve male heros who must save the day while fighting off the ladies. Obviously, many hi-jinx ensue and rest assured Vandread has plenty of those.

chii chii says...

Many very unique people tossed onto a spaceship, with their fighting mecca's, all to save earth from invading enemies. Tonnes of laughter to be had with each fun filled episode. If you liked one you'd surely like the other.

Vandread and Nadesico follow a ragtag team as they battle it out with sinister enemies, mixing comedy, romance and drama all in one.

jiropracter jiropracter says...

If you liked Vandread or Martian Successor Nadesico you will like the other because they both involve suspenseful space battles. As well Both have comedy elements and utilize Mechas to fight in space.

JenKenos JenKenos says...

Both stories are taking place in outer space, with a group of young people, each fighting for their important purpose. They show how team effort can overcome tricky challenges, but also let us take a look at how the crew is living everyday in their battleships, far away from their home, and the interactions between the members of it. Interactions which can be funny, romantic but dramatic as well. Along with flashy mecha battles, both titles are a treat.

Grach Grach says...

Both of these anime are not only high action mecha, but are also much more than that. In both, there is a harem/romance setup, with the male lead having many women vying for his attention; plenty of comedy abounds (more ecchi related in Vandread) as well.

If you liked (or loved) one, the other is a must see!

HKBattosai HKBattosai says...

If you liked Martian Successor Nadesico or Vandread then you'll probably like the other series as well. They are similar in a variety of ways. Both feature quirky casts with a very head strong male protagonist, are Sci-fi themed that primarily take place on space, have ships that are somewhat OP'd, and a plot device dealing with some form of separation of the human race.

Very similar echii sense of humor.

CheesyP18 CheesyP18 says...

Vandread and Kiddy Grade are virtually in the same genres. Theres action, ecchi, sci-fi, and mecha. The similarities are obviously seen between Vandread and the first part of Kiddy Grade. Comedy and fanservice are prominent, although there isn't as much fanservice in Vandread. Both have wonderful plots, and ask questions that have deeper meanings. A few of the differences are that Vandread places a larger role on sci-fi, where in Kiddy Grade, the sci-fi is just a backdrop. Also Vandread holds its comedy throughout the series where Kiddy Grade almost totally drops its comedy to trade in for a much more serious and dramatic plot.

freakzilla freakzilla says...

Kiddy Grade and Vandread are both state of the art mecha-animes. Though Vandread concentrates more on the comedy in the series, Kiddy Grade does it's best to keep up. Ecchi isn't feared either.

VRDave VRDave says...

Aside from all the big boobs in both of these series, you will like the fairly good action and the overall plot. Kiddy Grade doesn't really have much of a plot until the end, and even then it's still weak compared to Vandread. I will say that the style and feeling of both series is quite the same, although Vandread has humor and Kiddy Grade really doesn't.

Aydan Aydan says...

Space, space ships and fighting beauties what more do you want if you're into the science fiction genre. Another aspect that i liked was the ship-to-ship battles, although these battles where spares they where great.

If you like the combination of fanservice, space-theme and adventure but still want a nice storyline and somewhat likeable characters, then there are few anime other than Kiddy Grade and Vandread to watch.

mindlesspuppet mindlesspuppet says...

Both are incredibly alike in style, and similar settings. Geneshaft is a bit slower paced at times though.

CheesyP18 CheesyP18 says...

Setting for both animes are pretty much parallel with each other. Males and females are separated and the human race has colonized space. The one thing that I think make Geneshaft and Vandread similar is the conflict. In both series some philosophy is handed out and the conflicts can be compared. Each protagonist has to cope with an unknown. This unknown is the antagonist. I'm sure if you had enjoyed one of these, you would enjoy the other. Only thing that you should be worried about is a lighter approach in Vandread. There are loads, heaps, and tons of sexual tension and other random flak that are not present in Geneshaft.

sothis sothis says...

Vandread definitely comes to mind when thinking of Geneshaft. The two share many similarities including both taking place in a future where men and women are separated and are discriminated against for reasons that make up their very being. Both also contain a great deal of CG, and have a combination of lighthearted events and drama. I think you'd like one if you liked the other, though keep in mind that Vandread has a much more comical feel than Geneshaft.

amateurasu amateurasu says...

Ohhhhhhhh yeah.... Babes in futuristic jumpsuits... *drool* *ahem* Anyway, while Geneshaft is the darker and more serious of the two, it still has a bit of the lightheartedness that VanDread enjoys. Both are about battles with mysterious artifacts, for the future of humanity. Both have men and women separated, albeit in different ways, and explore what effect this has on relationships. Both also use CG to good effect in space battles (Geneshaft has the edge on VanDread in this regard, imho).

sublime sublime says...

Futuristic romp with none too disimilar plots. Both involve the seperation of the sexes, women being portrayed as the more dominant. Fighting against an unknown alien force. Romance undertones touched on in Vandread don't carry through as much to Geneshaft however, with Vandread being a tad comedic at times.

Baeron Baeron says...

Both Vandread, and Geneshaft can be described as follows: a misfit team formed from the start with a select crew, and a Wild Card of hope. Forsaken from their homes, they must cleave a passage through space against an unknown attacking force, as they cope with the ideals of their communities. They must also learn what it means to exist, on their path to discovering themselves, and saving humanity.

Both muse on the structure of their respective societies: Vandread on the relationships between men and women, and Geneshaft with the ideology of "production-line" humans.

I believe that if you liked one, the other will interest you with its similar background, yet distinctly different outcomes. These similarities and divergences are spawned from the production of humans through machines. It's as if they met, looked at each other, and then decided to go down sibling roads...

Reasons you might like Stellvia of the Universe...

sothis sothis says...

Both Stellvia and Vandread are two space epics of sorts that center around stories that seem lighthearted and basic at first, but ultimately spiral into something much, much more serious (though for Vandread, this change doesn't occur until the 2nd season). In addition, both contain a healthy mix of comedy and character development, in addition to plenty of darkness and sadness. If you liked one, you'd probably like the other; though I preferred Stellvia's "kids in space" theme a bit more than Vandread's "men and women = ecchiiiiiii" theme.

VRDave VRDave says...

Stellvia has very similar art style to Vandread. Even though it wasn't done by Gonzo, it has that feeling. It's another space comedy dealing with ships, mecha and the end of the world.

kamirura kamirura says...

Oh Noooo it's the end of the world! Sounds familiar? Then you should check out Stellvia of the Universe. Really similiar theme and the same funny humor. And it also feels like it's the same artist that drew the series but it isn't. But be sure to check it out if you liked vandread.

freakzilla freakzilla says...

Both Vandread and Stellvia are about space, but both put the emphasis on the characters. To protect their friends everyone goes through trials so they can get stronger.

Lothar Lothar says...

Both Stellvia and Vandread are series in which the characters to thier best to protect thier homes, friends and family. The main focus isn't on the battles, but on the characters. In both series we follow them as they succeeds, fails, betrays, forgives and develops. Both series make you wish for more, and you just can't wait to watch the next episode. Stellvia and vandread are two of my absolute favourite series, and I don't think anyone would ever regret watching them.

GodsDragon GodsDragon says...

If you enjoy space anime then you might want to check out Vandread and Stellvia of the Universe. Both of these anime start out in a happy atmosphere, but as the series progresses it becomes more serious. They both have a good amount of comedy mixed in but Vandread tends to have a bit more ecchi. :P

Gonzo does it again with this action-packed mecha comedy. She's an ordinary high school girl. He's a counterterror agent assigned to protect her from those who would steal the information locked in her mind. OK, so she's not so normal after all. kamirura kamirura says...

To work with a girl will that really work?? A guy named Sousuke has to do just that, exactly like Hibiki. Will this be a good combination or will it all fall appart just because of a girl? The guys have to make up their mind and get the robots going to protect their cuties. This is another mecha/comedy with a little toutch of romance. Be sure to check it out.

freakzilla freakzilla says...

Both FMP and Vandread have two parts to them: a mecha part (Vandread has great CG here) and a comedy part (where a guy comes from another world and meet girls for the first time, leading to hilarious situations). Check it out, you just might like it.

Aporias Aporias says...

Full Metal Panic and Vandread are extremely similar in comparison. These two series excel at literally placing the main characters worlds apart from each other. Not only do their differences confuse them, but it also allows them to draw closer to each other. In terms of giant robots and explosions they're all here, as well as some humor placed around the different perspectives the characters see. The only real difference between the two is that Vandread hosts a variety of different ladies in Hibiki's harem while Full Metal Panic focuses on the development of Sousuke's relationship with Chidori.

Sol Bianca takes place in space and has a similar feel to Vandread, where earth has been abandoned and taken over. The one hope is a pirate ship, armed to the teeth with neat weapons, and of course the ship's computer is really cool too.

sothis sothis says...

Sol Bianca also contains the space aspect of Vandread, but is coupled with better music, MUCH better animation, and an all-female cast (for the most part). Much shorter than Vandread, Sol Bianca will surely please fans of sci fi epics. If nothing else, it is beautiful eye candy.

At heart, Vandread and Tenchi universe are bought space adventures, although they might not start out or end as adventures, the main body of the show is filled with an adventure trough space. There are ship-to-ship battles in bought series, but Vandread has a lot more then Tenchi. Where Vandread uses equipment, Tenchi Universe uses powers. Although both have a great comical side, they are mainly space adventures focusing less on the technical side and more on the fun side of an adventure trough space.
