Synopsis:

Under the pale glow of a full moon, the night air is filled with spirits and magic -- mere humans would do well to stay at home on nights like these. If you happen to be a shapeshifting fox, however, the time is ripe for a exploring a run down temple nearby, no matter how ghastly its appearance may be. As it happens, sometimes appearances are not deceiving: the temple is haunted by a mischevious tanuki who does his damnedest to scare the intruder away! A fierce battle of wits between the mythical creatures starts. The tanuki seems to know every trick in the book, but the fox has been around the block a few times too...

Cat Soup

Alt titles: Nekojiru-sou

Cat Soup main image

Cat Soup is an extremely abstract, abnormal, and at times, disturbing adventure, from the director of Nadesico. This 30 minute OVA follows two kittens through what seems to be the underworld, as they search for one of their lost souls. Along the way, they encounter new (edible) friends, scary situations, and even the end of the world! Will these felines manage to return unscathed? Or more importantly, avoid becoming the main course for dinner? Confusion abounds in this quirky OVA.

I think if you liked Ugokie Kori no Tatehiki, you might enjoy Cat Soup. These anime are somewhat disturbing, yet humorous still (if you have a dark sense of humor) and the lack of dialogue leaves your imagination to do some of the work. Both of these anime are good for someone who is looking for something "outside of the box" as neither one come close to being 'traditional'.

First of all in both animes acts a creature what should be a cat :) next I think these two animes are really alike by those unfinishing transformations ogf the characters and their suroundings. And at last both Cat Soup and Ugokie Kori no Tatehiki gives a lot to think about.

Neo Tokyo

Alt titles: Manie-Manie Meikyu Monogatari

Neo Tokyo main image

Neo-Tokyo (commonly called Manie-Manie Monogatari) is a collection of three sci-fi stories, based on the stories of Taku Mayumura. "Labryinth Labyrithos", "The Running Man", and "Order To Stop Construction" were directed by Taro Rin, Yoshiaki Kawajiri, and Katsuhiro Otomo, respectively. Ranging from an abstract demented clown to malfunctioning robots, each of these short stories are sure to entertain.

They are both really alike by totaly insane plot :)

Neo Tokyo contains three diferent stories but I guess Ugokie Kori no Tatehiki could take part in Neo tokyo too. Both animes are magical, really crazy and sometimes even unclear what the main idea of the author was.

Pom Poko

Pom Poko main image

In modern Japan, Tokyo is expanding and considerably reducing animals' habitats, including those of the tanuki (raccoon-like creatures). What humanity doesn't know, though, is that tanuki are intelligent creatures, that can talk and even walk on two legs with the power of transformations! To secure their survival, the two combating tanuki clans join forces against mankind in a war they dub 'Pom Poko'! Humans are a difficult adversary, though... can the tanuki open mankind's eyes to the beauty of nature, before their homes are replaced by yet another suburb?

Of the 狐狸 (kori, foxes and tanuki), the Japanese trickster-spirit animals that regularly assume human form, the most commonly used in anime is the fox spirit, 狐 (kitsune). For various reasons, the 狸 (tanuki, Japanese "raccoon-dog" or Nyctereutes procyonoides) is not seen as often. However, both trickster species have a strong role in Japanese folklore, and both make their appearances in Ugokie Kori no Tatehiki and Pom Poko.

If you find Japanese folklore fascinating; if you are captivated by the trickster animals; or if you just want to see how very far Japanese animation had come, from 1933 to 1994, then you must see both these anime.

Ugokie Kori no Tatehiki shorts is a piece of animation history, while Legend of the Forest purports to tell you animation history through its evolution of styles. Also both are frankly very dull, so if you actually liked one you may also like the other.

Broken Down Film

Alt titles: Onboro Film

Broken Down Film main image

The short Broken Down Film is just that: broken. The film has aged poorly and the projector has trouble keeping the frame straight, but the protagonist is well aware of this. Exploiting these conditions the bumbling cowboy attempts to rescue a damsel in distress and win her heart.

Broken Down Film is an homage to very early silent shorts; Ugokie Kori no Tatehiki is the real thing. I found Broken Down Film mildly amusing while the original was less so but you'll likely enjoy either as much.
