Both Elfen Lied and Trinity Blood feature a main character who can be a sweet and innocent person who makes you smile or a blood-chilling killer who chops your head off. It's fairly rare to find someone who changes that drastically, but Abel and Nyuu both manage.
Teito Klein is a former slave who attends the Barsburg Empire's military academy. Having no memory of his past and the power to wield a rare ability called Zaiphon, Teito is constantly under the scrutiny of his peers - except for his best friend Mikage, the only person he connects with. Now, with the evil beings known as Kor after his soul, the Barsburg Empire after his blood and only the legendary Seven Ghosts to protect him, Teito must unlock the memories of his past before he ends up as a sacrifice for Verloren, the sealed God of Death.
Both of these anime revolve around the struggle between light and dark, and take place mainly in a cathedral setting. With some beautiful animation and intriguing character interaction, the animes are very enjoyable. Also, both animes have the introduction of ancient, mystical powers that tend to be the central point of the plot.
Alucard is a vampire who works for Hellsing – an organization responsible for hunting down and destroying other vampires. In these dark times, whoever is bitten by a vampire turns into a ghoul -- with the exception of Seras Victoria, Alucard’s newly created and appointed apprentice. Now, Seras must serve her master, Alucard and work for Integra Wingates Hellsing. Nefarious vampire activities are being reported throughout England, and it all traces back to the organization named “Millennium”. Will the Hellsing organization, under the command of Sir Integra Wingates Hellsing, be able to prevent a full scale war? Or will the world become a battlefield of destruction?
Vampires. The Vatican. Violence. Vendettas. Get it yet? Also: big guns, secret orders, betrayal. Both series have it all. Trinity Blood is the more innocent of the two animes, with more laughs and less gore, and the style is more normal vs. the over-the-top animation of Hellsing OVA. But they are both about the brittle balance (and the brutal fight) of good vs. evil, with morally ambiguous main characters and a wagonload of religious symbolism. If that gets you drooling, one or the other should suit your palate.
With a past shrouded in mystery and a blank memory, Shiki Tohno seems to be just another "average high school student". That is, until he nearly kills a female vampire with his secret deadly ability to "see the lines". His journey to unlock the secrets of the Tohno family and unbury his own lost memories has only just begun, and now he must also help the woman, Arcueid Brunestud, find a lethal phantom named Roa, and kill it using his ability.
Do you like vampires that don't suck blood all the time? How about vampires with grudges that span centuries? Both of these animes have vampires like that. Although the settings of each anime are vastly different, they definitely have similar vibes.
60 years ago, a strange case of insomnia struck the population, forcing them to stay awake for more than a full week. The victims, completely sleep deprived, all went mad. To cure this illness, a new medicine was produced, but the side effects turned the patients into vampires. Humanity went to war against this new species and triumphed, but some of the vampires managed to survive. Born from a Human and a Vampire, the main character Mi Liu, “The Child of Hope”, is to represent the new hope that will connect the two species. Ringleader of a bank robbery, Mi Liu is arrested and transferred to a special prison of the National Defense Agency that monitors Vampires. Trying to break free with Anji, Mi Liu is attacked by strange monsters and he finds out that the prison location corresponds to the birthplace of Vampires, the old capital “Blue Town." Why are Vampires trapped in Blue Town? What are those strange monsters attacking them? Our heroes must fight to solve those mysteries.
In both of these anime, vampires (or Bloodivores) are considered somewhat second class. They are either confined to certain areas, made to wear special collars, or other grievances. Among the vampires, there are those with powers. The plots of the anime are a little different, as is the technology and world settings, but if you're looking for vampires with super powers battling strange things, these two anime fit the bill.
