Palme is a robot crafted from the wood of a rare tree; though he isn't a real boy, he wants nothing more than to please Xian, the wife of his master. Upon the eve of her death, Palme ceases to function, until one night he is brought an egg from a mysterious woman. "The Egg of Touto must be returned to Soma," she says, and vanishes into the night. Now, with the help of newfound friends and allies, he must travel to The Below to return the treasure, before those who would steal it destroy both him and his companions.

In the lush fantasy world of Earthsea, dragons and humans no longer live together as one due to the greed of humanity. It is in this world that the young Prince Arren lives – a young man who is dejected, tormented, and afraid of the ultimate goal of life: death. After killing his father and stealing an heirloom sword forged by magic, Arren sets forth with his trusty steed into the unknown countryside, experiencing the joys and darkness of mankind. Along with the powerful mage Sparrowhawk, an unlikely friend and his own personal angst, Arren must rediscover his desire to live while evil forces threaten his precious life's existence.
Gedo Senki, like Tree of Palme, has a tormented main character who must discover who he is. Both, as well, have somewhat non-traditional fantasy worlds full of wonder. If you liked Tree of Palme, check out the much better, much higher budgeted Gedo Senki.
One day, the lonely woodworker Gepetto fetches a log and carves it into the shape of a boy; he names it Pinocchio and promises to treat it as his own son. Gepetto's wish soon comes true when a fairy turns Pinocchio into a boy - albeit still in his wooden form - and gives a cricket the power to speak in order to keep track of the newly-created child. Pinocchio wants badly to become a real boy by whatever means necessary, often becoming selfish in the process and leaving his fairy benefactor to punish him by turning parts of his body into trees. In addition, the townsfolk take advantage of Pinocchio's naivety at near every turn, selling him as a talking tree, kidnapping and forcing him to perform as a circus freak, and tricking him into giving up his money - amongst other things. Can Pinocchio survive these harsh lessons and become a real boy?
A Tree of Palme and Kashi no Ki Mokku are extremely similar, telling their own dark and melancholy tales of Pinocchio. Both are definitely not meant for children even though they appear to be, and portray a less than perfect protagonist. If you liked one you'd definitely like the other.
Metropolis is a grand high-tech city-state populated by humans and robots alike. It is in these streets that Detective Shunsaku Ban and his sidekick Kenichi search for the rebel scientist Dr. Laughton who unbenounced to them, is developing a super android named Tima as a tool for the Duke of Metropolis. What starts out as a normal case turns into mayhem as the scientist is murdered, and the true plans of the Duke are finally revealed...
My Beautiful Girl, Mari is a story of two childhood friends, Nam-woo and Jun-ho, who are growing up in a fishing village full of unwanted change. With the discovery of a glowing marble, Nam-woo sometimes finds himself in a lush, dreamlike world, inhabited by a beautiful girl named Mari. With more change inevitable, Nam-woo and Jun-ho struggle to cope with reality, even when tragedy strikes.
This is a gut recommendation. Neither have much in common but the characters in both anime live in a dream like land and strive towards their goals. Powerful animation in both anime leave a great impression on you while watching both tales unfold. If you liked either of these I suggest checking out the other as you will most likely like it too.
One thousand years after the Giant Warriors caused an apocalyptic event known as the seven days of fire, humans are living in constant fear of the Toxic Jungle. This ever-spreading forest is filled with poisonous plants and gigantic monstrous insects; even the very air is deadly. Nausicaa is the kind and wise princess of a small, peaceful country known as the Valley of the Wind, which has so far avoided the spread of the forest. One night a large airship containing one of the Giant Warriors crashes into the valley. The following day soldiers from the powerful nation of Tolmekia invade the Valley of the Wind to reclaim and revive the warrior. As the only one who truly believes that there is a way for humans to live alongside the insects, Nausicaa must find a way to stop the war that now threatens her people and protect the Toxic Jungle before the Tolmekians burn it to the ground.
