Synopsis:

Tada is a young man on the fast track to the Cosmo Academy -- a school which only accepts applicants every three years, and whose entrance rate is under 1%. Having passed all the prior exams, the final test is drawing near: survive for 53 days aboard a derelict spaceship with only 9 other would-be cadets to assist you. But much to the dismay of Tada and his peers, their ship has acquired an eleventh member! Can the crew band together to survive the test? Or will sabotage simply destroy them from within...

Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Overture to a New War

Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Overture to a New War
  • Movie (1 ep x 95 min)
  • 1993

Having recently acquired the title of Count, Reinhard von Lohengramm is considered increasingly dangerous by the highest officials of the Galactic Empire. However, they cannot move directly against a man so favored of the Emperor, and he has proven his capacity in warfare. Thus, they intend to send him into a battle that they will ensure he cannot win. In the Free Planets Alliance, Wen-Li Yang's friend Jean Robert Lapp intends to propose marriage to their mutual acquaintance, Jessica Edwards. Wen-Li has only just returned home, but his respite will be all too brief: the Alliance soon hears of the intended Imperial invasion, and the man once more finds himself in a fleet headed for combat. The battle of Astate is about to commence...

Space opera anime films at their finest. Overture to a New War is part of a much larger franchise while They Were Eleven is a standalone work, however both are fine watches for fans of classic space opera (and the Galactic Heroes franchise in total will also give hours of entertainment for such fans).

Memories

Memories

This set of 3 fantastic stories will take you from the haunting delusions of a space explorer, to a bio-chemical threat with the power to wipe out all of Tokyo, and finally to a day in the life of a young boy who lives in a world ruled by cannons. These stores will capture you with their intriguing storylines and awe inspiring artwork.

They Were Eleven and the Magnetic Rose segment of Memories are both psychological thrillers set in abandoned space ships.

They are both about an assortment of strangers trapped in a facility in outer space. They can't trust each other, for good reason. They both (vague spoiler) have to do a bit with diseases of some kind.

While both have their lighthearted sides, both of these anime are fairly serious sci-fi dramas set in space.

Both films are about a ship that gets taken over by an unknown force, and how the crew struggles to survive and remain sane and rational.
