If you liked the The Place Promised In Our Early Days anime, the Anime-Planet community thinks you'd like:
In Japan, there is a disturbing rumor being spread that people's shadows are ripping from their bodies, never to be seen again. For one young man, the frightening nature of this rumor is just beginning to manifest in the form of a nightmarish world that he can't seem to escape from. In this place full of dark minions and demons, he and his friends fight futilely against unknown enemies, only to be brought back to the "real world" as quickly as they left it. Is this real, or a dream? Only one person holds the key to destroying and saving the world as he knows it...
It's been seven years since Yuuichi Aizawa returned to the city he once lived in as a child. Though many things happened to Yuuichi in his past, he can only remember bits and pieces. His parents left Yuuichi in the care of Akiko once again, and this time, he will attend the same school as his cousin Nayuki. Many different girls appear before him, and some of them seem to know him from his past. Yuuichi must now recover his memories of the dark secrets that he erased from his heart, before he loses his precious ones.
Kanon 2006 carries a style similar to Beyond the Clouds, as though it's at times upbeat, it has its fair share of solemn moments as well. Though the general story concepts are different and provide for different atmospheres, if its romantic aspects appealed to you then Kanon 2006 would be a good place to turn. Not a guaranteed hit, but I found my appreciation of the two to fall under many of the same categories. Also, if it helps, Kanon 2006 has stunning animation to boot along with a beautiful soundtrack, so the environments provide for similar sensual pleasure.
Lovely Complex is a story of a boy and a girl. The girl, Koizumi Risa, is much taller than the average Japanese girl; and the boy, Atsushi Otani, is much shorter than the average Japanese boy. Due to their immense difference in size and constant bickering with each other, the duo is unwillingly the school’s comic relief. As Risa and Otani continue to provide endless laughter for the masses, their friendship develops; and with that, so does Risa’s feelings for Otani...
My Beautiful Girl, Mari is a story of two childhood friends, Nam-woo and Jun-ho, who are growing up in a fishing village full of unwanted change. With the discovery of a glowing marble, Nam-woo sometimes finds himself in a lush, dreamlike world, inhabited by a beautiful girl named Mari. With more change inevitable, Nam-woo and Jun-ho struggle to cope with reality, even when tragedy strikes.
There is a euphoric beauty in both of these titles revolving a couple of old time friends, and a single unique girl who changes their mundane lives.
One is a bit more magical than the other, but both could be viewed in a similar light.
When Haruka, Yuu and their friends decided to go ghost hunting, they had no idea the "ghosts" they'd find would turn their lives upside down. Black-clad and wielding quantum powers, these knights from the future are after an artifact of immense power that they hope will save their dimension from destruction: the Dragon Torque; and Haruka seems to be the key. As factions within the knights violently disagree on how to proceed, Haruka and the gang are caught up in a fight with the Shangri La, in an existential battle where fates of entire universes are decided.
Noein and The Place Promised in Our Early Days are set in futures where scientists experiment with parallel worlds, but the real story in both shows is about the relationships between the characters. Noein can be kind of flashy, whereas The Place Promised is a little more slice-of-life, but I think both would appeal to a similar audience.
