I know this is fairly obvious, as these are both really popular, but its worth pointing out. Each series is a thought-inducing, insightful, clever series that will be talked about for years to come. These are the series for the person who enjoys something a little more out there.

Rilkar Rilkar says...

One of the aspects that made Evangelion very popular is Rei Ayanami the character who started the quiet girl type. Yuki Nagato from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is a parody of the quiet girl type. If you like one you should watch the other to appreciate both shows more.

It might seem that i'm speaking totally nonsense, but these series are probably two of the most deep background stories ever seen in japanese animation.

Both stories may seem banal at the very beginning, but i can tell you for sure that tha work behind them is as huge as your imagination can understand and even over, and you'll find out only keeping on watching.

Kyoran Kazoku Nikki

Kyoran Kazoku Nikki

Once upon a time, a creature named Enka tried to destroy everything on Earth. It was eventually slain by humans; but before dying Enka proclaimed that one day its child would return to the planet, spreading fear and despair throughout all humanity. Now, thousands of years later, DNA tests have identified six 'children of Enka'. Only one of them is dangerous, but nobody knows which one (and killing them all would be mean!) Instead, 'Operation Cozy Family' is born! Normal human Ouka Midarezaki is forced into marrying Kyouka, one of the children of Enka; and together they play the roles of 'father' and 'mother' for the other children. But will family bonding and love really be enough to prevent the destruction of the planet?

Both series feature hyperactive heroines with godlike powers (real or not), which gather some really unusual cast around them. They both also can't imagine their life as boring or plain - and while either of them is around, no one else can, too. These series are optimistic and fun, but still have some dramatic episodes. Check them out if you'd like hilarious, yet thoughtful experience.

First off, I have *never* seen two characters - in my ENTIRE life - as similar to each-other as Haruhi Suzumiya is to Kyouka from Kyouran Kazoku Nikki. Both girls (if you can call them that) not only are honestly under the impression they are superior to everyone else, but are also loud about this and completely unashamed of it. Kyouka even goes as far to refer to herself as GOD...and Haruhi herself *is* God (or, at least, a god).

Yet both Kyouka and Haruhi still care about the people around them - especially the normal male lead characters (Kyon in Haruhi and Ouka in Kyouran Kazoku Nikki), though in the case of said male leads, they do not like to admit it, even to themselves. Furthermore, the leading male characters in both shows are the only people who are capable of causing the loud, dominant female leads to change their minds or become flustered. (And when Kyouka and Haruhi become flustered, it doesn't last long - with an insult or excuse, they quickly revert back to their bossy, self-assured selves.)

There are other similarities in the characters and their dynamics with each-other, too; Mikuru in Haruhi and Yuka in Kyouran Kazoku Nikki are both meek, innocent girls Haruhi/Kyouka love to dress-up; Itsuki and Ginka are both smiling enablers to the lead female characer; Kyon and Ouka are both the voice of reason among craziness caused by Haruhi/Kyouka who don't appreciate being thrown into romantic situations with the lead female character and are constantly having their patience tested.

Really, though, both anime are centered around one normal guy and one loud, obnoxious girl and the craziness that follows them. And, while Kyouran Kazoku Nikki might be a bit more, uh, insane than Haruhi, both have the same basic styles of humor with serious moments mixed in - if you like/liked one anime, you will like the other.

The main thing I noticed while watching Kyouran Kazoku Nikki is that the main leads, Kyouka and Ouka, remind me of Haruhi and Kyon from Suzumiya Haruhi.

In these two shows, you have the female lead who's over-confident and throws everyone (especially the male lead) into strange situation (mostly because she's bored). The male lead is the one who is usually stuck in going along with the female lead's whims.

For starters both series focus quite a bit on the supernatural aspect with time travelers, monsters, and well other occult related subjects.  With both series featuring a strong leading lady throw in some mystery, comedy, and just a bit of romance and it creates an enjoyable experience for just about anyone.

scizorg45 scizorg45 says...

Both focus on the supernatural being there, but only in the background. Both also have a very shallow plot and focus more on interaction between the characters.

If you liked one, check out the other.

Occult Academy and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya both center around the supernatual and both show handle the subject manner in a humorous way most of the time. Both shows star a stong willed female leads that can be both adventurous and tomboyish, but at other times display a softer more vunerable side. Both shows also have alot of school life elements mixed in with action.

These shows feature strong female leads who are arrogant (but cute at the same time) and order everyone around themselves, have lots of comedic elements and a bit of romance.

HarioSagara HarioSagara says...

Imagine if you took the personalities from the characters in Haruhi Suzumiya and intensified them to the extreme! What you'd get would be MM! Both of these series feature the same types of characters but in MM! their interactions become over the top. Mio from MM! has a lot of striking similarities to Haruhi, from her bossiness to the slight god-complex to the comedic abuse of the male protagonist.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya has a more in depth storyline with more well rounded characters while MM! relies more on its outrageous slapstick comedy. Both anime have undercurrents of romance weaved into the stories but MM! has more of a complex love triangle scenario. If you ever want to see what the characters of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya would look like from a more intensified perspective than I recommend MM!

both of these show feature a strong female lead albeit they sometimes suffer from delusions of grandeur.  lots of zany laugh at loud moments.

Both Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya revolve around one regular boy who is trying to make his way through a normal regular life. But with friends who are all such oddities that's not quite as easy as it sounds.

MugiwaraMarius MugiwaraMarius says...

Both Denpa Onna and Haruhi feature a normal male lead that gets tossed into a crazy world. Both Kyon and Niwa play the straightman to the rest of the cast's insanity. They both take a very jaded view of the world and their lives but their friends slowly open them up to new and different ways of thinking. Both shows have a similar style of humor and if you enjoyed one you will probably enjoy the other.

moto250x moto250x says...

There are a couple of similarities between these two shows. In both Haruhi and Denpa Onna to seishun otoko the male lead character’s monologues describe the strange happenings around them with a sarcastic but rational view. They are also roped in to solve a lot of the problems that arise in both shows. Throughout both shows there is an eerie feeling that the powers, which are so easily denied, can actually affect their universe. Although proof of Haruhi’s powers is exposed earlier, in Denpa Onna there are scenes that suggest Erio’s powers are just as real. So if you liked one then you might like the other.
