Synopsis:

In the 14th year of the Tenpo era (1843), life in Edo is grim for many; famines plague the land, frugality is enforced in many aspects of life, and social standing rules the day. Yuki is a floater who has twice run away from the floater ghetto - an act that has marked him for execution. But when a chance encounter leads him into a fight with a yoi, a mysterious monster from another world, Yuki finds himself being recruited into the Bansha Aratamesho, an organization charged with hunting down and destroying yoi. For Yuki has the power of ayagami, which draws out the true meaning of words and allows Yuki to create weapons from the kanji in the names of his enemies. Yuki must make a choice: will he continue to run, rejecting the powers of the Other World, or will he join the Ayashi in the fight against the yoi?

Amatsuki

Amatsuki

When Tokidoki Rikugou donned a pair of virtual reality glasses and entered a Bakumatsu-era exhibit at a museum, he had no idea that his life would drastically change. While walking across a bridge in the fabricated reality, Tokidoki ran across a small being and a monster called a nue - and he was promptly attacked. His eye was damaged, but more importantly, Tokidoki discovered that he was now stuck inside the "virtual reality" filled with samurai and spirits. Now, with the help of Kuchiha, a warrior woman possessed by a dog spirit; and Shinonome, a fellow student who has been stuck, just like Tokidoki, for the past two years, Tokidoki must search for the truth behind the nue and try to find a way home.

Both series take place in roughly the same time period, involve the extermination of ayakashi, and address similar themes.  However, Amatsuki is a lot more light-hearted and fun than TIAA.

Ghost Hunt

Ghost Hunt

Mai Taniyama is a first year high school student who lives a carefree life telling ghost stories with her friends. One day, she meets Kazuya Shibuya, the head of Shibuya Psychic Research (SPR); and together, she tags along to help him investigate paranormal activities in a haunted school building. His assistant Lin was hurt during an incident to protect Mai from danger, so what more can Mai do than to take the job as Shibuya's assistant? Along with a team of other ghost hunters, they will uncover the mystery of a strange case coming their way, while Mai starts to discover her own abilities.

The two organizations in Ghost Hunt and Ayashi are alike -- banishing the supernatural from everyday life. Though TIAA is more political.

In feudal Japan, evil spirits known as mononoke plague both households and the countryside, leaving a trail of fear in their wake. However, in order to draw his sword he must first understand the Form, Truth and Reason of the mononoke. Armed with a sharp wit and keen intellect, the Medicine Seller wanders from place to place, striking down the mononoke in his wake.

Although the tempo of the two shows is very different - Mononoke takes its time to tell a tale, whilst TIAA revels in moments of unadulterated action - both shows will appeal to a similar group of fans. If you enjoy a period tale with a good twist of the fantastical, all presented neatly in a package of superb animation, then TIAA and Mononoke will appeal to you.

Both Requiem from the Darkness and Ayashi deal with the same theme: the main character lives between two worlds, and has to decide which one he wants to be in.  Both also deal with supernatural elements.

Shounen Onmyouji

Shounen Onmyouji

Being the insignificant heir to a talented family is rough, especially for someone who has little of his own talents and honestly desires to live up to the family name. Masahiro is the young grandson of the famed Abe no Seime. Although most consider him to be little in the face of his older male relatives, Masahiro is certain he can not only continue the family legacy but that he can stand in his own right as an Onmyouji. With the assistance of his friend Mokkun, he works to increase his skills and abilities as a spiritual protector and guide. With a great deal of will and the quiet assistance of his insightful grandfather, he will become a force of good in the battle against encroaching evil.

Both Tenpou Ibun Ayakashi Ayashi and Shounen Onmyouji have a main character whose abilities to defeat Youkai are suddenly awakened or realized. With this new twist, they are left to deal with a host of new problems, situations and comrades. Also, both anime involve a lot of cool fight scenes and clever imagery of Youkai.
