Cat Soup

Cat Soup

Cat Soup is an extremely abstract, abnormal, and at times, disturbing adventure, from the director of Nadesico. This 30 minute OVA follows two kittens through what seems to be the underworld, as they search for one of their lost souls. Along the way, they encounter new (edible) friends, scary situations, and even the end of the world! Will these felines manage to return unscathed? Or more importantly, avoid becoming the main course for dinner? Confusion abounds in this quirky OVA.

Cat Soup may feature animal protagonists and be a whole lot shorter than Tekkon Kinkreet, both movies are (somewhat violent) stories about a duo adventuring, and finding back missing parts to truly be alive. Cat Soup is a whole lot more abstract and both animations take a completely different turn near the end, but nonetheless, I think you would like Tekkon Kinkreet if you liked Cat Soup and vica versa because they are both wonderfully light stories with a grim undertone.

Kyousougiga

Kyousougiga

They’re looking for a special rabbit that can possibly help them get home, but plenty of challenges stand in their way including a robot, the meddling Council of Three, and endless exploration yet to be done!

Although Tekkon Kinkreet's plot is slightly more coherent than Kyousougiga, if you liked the use of wild color and movement in either show, you'd probably like the other. Additionally, both shows involve young protagonists moving through bizarre city landscapes.

Durarara!!

Durarara!!

Looking for a change, Mikado moves from the countryside to bustling Ikebukuro to attend the same high school as his best friend, Masaomi. Though navigating a new school and friendships can prove tough by itself, Mikado also finds an overwhelming number of new delights and dangers in the district he now calls home. From a friendly Russian sushi bar to the violent color gangs, to even an urban legend in the form of a black motorcycle rider, each resident of Ikebukuro is unique and frightening. But the town is smaller than it seems at first, and these strange events appear to be connected. Will the growing storm sweep up the transplanted country boy and his friends or will Mikado find himself at the center of a dramatic change for Tokyo?

If you liked the series Durarara!! then I recommend you check out the movie Tekkon Kinkreet.  Although both are very different in style, both are similar thematically, dealing with a superficial storyline about gang relations and both share a similar atmosphere.  There are deeper currents below the surface of both of these anime and although the darker elements are there, neither anime really beats you over the head to demonstrate the point.  The point is made, rather, by events unfurling and by watching what develops around the characters.  If you enjoyed the movie for a more extended visit to a similar place check out the series.

Ping Pong The Animation

Ping Pong The Animation

Makoto Tsukimoto (nicknamed Smile) is a quiet high-schooler who's been friends with the loud and energetic Yukata Hoshino (nicknamed Peco) since childhood. They're both in the local table tennis club and both have a natural talent for it, although Smile's personality always enables him from winning against Peco. The club teacher, however, notices Smile's talent and tries to make him gain some sportive tenacity.

Not your average animation look. Both of these series have a style that breaks the normal when it comes to style. Odd angles and faces that look almost normal in a rather funky way.

At the heart of both is a buddy title, yet the overall storylines are not similar.  Tekkon is a darker title, while Ping Pong is a slice of life/sports title.

None the less, if your an animation lover, and enjoy something a little outside of anime staples, you might want to check out the respective recommendation.
