Spice and Wolf

Spice and Wolf

Since long ago, the wolf goddess Holo has honored a contract to bless the rural village of Pasloe with fertile harvests; and in return she has been celebrated and worshipped by the villagers. But as mankind advances, the people have begun to take command of nature for themselves and have made their own god to worship. Holo finds that she is paid little more than lip service, if not outright mocked; and considering the contract annulled, she takes human form and enlists the aid of a passing merchant, Kraft Lawrence, to return to her home in the snowy forests to the north. As they journey together, Kraft finds that he has plenty to learn from this capricious god, and she from him as well.

Spice and Wolf and Tactics feature the relationship between god-like creatures and humans that befriend them. In both cases there is a backdrop of folklore that is established in an historical setting, Medieval Europe in the first place and 19th century Japan in the second. The unique interaction between a human lead and a supernatural creature creates a bond between the two as they must cooperate in order to succeed. Making money also features in both series, being absolutely vital to the plot of Spice and Wolf.

GeGeGe no Kitarou (2007)

The world of the supernatural is a terrifying place, especially when youkai decide to seek revenge and punish humans for their careless ways. Luckily, help is at hand in the form of a young ghoul named Kitarou, who has taken it upon himself to protect mankind from malevolent monsters. With the help of his walking, talking eyeball of a father and his various spiritual friends – including the tricky and rather smelly Nezumi Otoko, the tomboyish Neko Musume, and the elderly Sunakake Baba and Konaki Jiji – Kitarou defends the clueless humans from soul-stealing Yasha, demons of death and many, many more.

Both GeGeGe no Kitarou and Tactics are steeped in Japanese mythology and the supernatural. Both also focus on someone preventing/exorcising spirits who are causing trouble for humans. If you liked one then definitely check out the other.

Both have an awful similar plot. IE, there's a problem with a supernatural creature/phenomena and some guys are going to fix it. Although tactics usually spends more time on one problem..

Anyway, if you liked one, check out the other.

This series reminded me of tactics because it has a (semi)human living together with a bunch of demons. They both have some lurking evil in the background(tactics way more in the background) and the main character who tries to live with these demons(Tactics wants more of them, while Mago wants to get rid of them)

While Gingitsune is more slice of life and Tactics more mystery, both shows really emphasize Japan's stories and beliefs in a way that I find interesting and endearing.  They also both handle the issue of what happens when a person can see these spirits and those around them can't, though Gingitsune takes a lighter approach to the issue.
