Synopsis:

Kotarou is a brash young orphan in war-torn Japan, on the run from mysterious pursuers with Tobimaru, his faithful canine companion. Clueless as to why anyone would want him, much less imperial warriors from mainland China, a chance encounter with a strange wandering swordsman could not be more unwelcome in Kotarou's skeptical eyes – especially when the stranger has a secret past that has caused him to seal his blade. Forced by circumstance to work together for survival, the unlikely duo forge a tenuous friendship that is threatened all too soon when Kotarou's pursuers thrust the two into a dizzying whorl of clashing ambitions between men both big and small. Will the stranger manage to overcome his past and save them both from peril with his blade?

Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto

Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto

It is the era of Bakumatsu – the last years of the shogunate. In the general turmoil caused by warring groups with different political interests, a curious theatrical group known as the Yuyama Troupe is set out for revenge. They come across a mysterious young swordsman, Akizuki Youjirou, who seems to be burdened with a dark past. Thrown around by currents of history, powerful people from different factions and personal relations, Akizuki tries to fulfill his mission to destroy an ancient, cursed relic, the Lord’s Head, which has caused chaos and bloodshed for thousands of years.

I am aware that one anime is a movie and one's a series, but still:similarity between protagonists is evident in: - their past: both are struggling with a mistake they made and trying their best to cope with it - their introvertial personality: though they both keep to themselves, something/someone opens them up and consecutively clears their consciences - incredible swordsmanship: both are master swordsmen and both quite reserved about itWhile the style of animation in consistent in both - rich and too fast for your eye to catch the details (I actually went frame by frame in both anime to see the "juicy" action parts) also the music is very similar (don't know - same performers?) and both anime succeded getting some tears in my eyes (and not of laughter).

Blade of the Immortal

Blade of the Immortal has same feel-like setting on this one. Travelling as a duo, through the escapades of journey and circle of fate.

Bleach

Bleach

Fifteen-year-old Ichigo Kurosaki is a typical teen with fighting skills, two caring sisters and a special trait: he can see ghosts. However, when Ichigo and his family find themselves under attack by a huge beast, Ichigo discovers that there’s more to the supernatural world than the everyday specter. Vengeful spirits known as Hollows roam the world in search of devouring souls, and Shinigami – soul reapers – work tirelessly to defeat them and guide normal ghosts into a place called Soul Society. Ichigo valiantly fights the Hollow that threatens his sisters, but on the verge of defeat a Shinigami named Rukia gives him her powers, turning him into a Shinigami himself. Ichigo must now adjust to his new life of both vanquishing and saving souls for the sake of Soul Society.

This recommendation is to a lesser extent... if you have seen Sword of the Stranger and enjoyed the fight scenes near the end you may enjoy the long fight scenes in Bleach. Although the fights in Sword of the Stranger are based in a more realistic world, the two medias have similar fight feels. If you are watching Bleach and enjoy the fights and would like to see some great animation and realist fight ic scenes then Sword of the Stranger is highly recommended for you.

Comedy

Comedy
  • OVA (1 ep x 10 min)
  • 2002

Legend tells of a lone swordsman who lives in the Demon's Castle, the ruins near the Black Forest. This mysterious stranger only accepts rare books for his services, books from the ancient past. Comedy tells the story of a young girl who desperately wishes for her family and village to be saved from the coming English soldiers' wrath, and is willing to trade a precious book in exchange for the deed. With only her legs beneath her, she runs towards the Black Forest, hoping to get there in time...

If you're looking for a movie with a brilliant story line, beautifully dark animation, mood setting music, and seeing a horde of enemies get sliced in half from scalp to crotch, then both Comedy and Stranger -Mukou Hadan- were created with you in mind. Not to mention that these are two of best anime movies of all time, in my opinion.

While one is a movie and the other is a full 26 episode show, they are both very similiar in over all feel and characters. They both revolve around a strong samurai who is followed by a young boy and a dog. Sword of the stranger is a bit more realistic than dororo, but if you liked one I bet you would like the other.
