Hitomi was just a normal high school girl, until she was taken by the mysterious Van Fanel and dropped into a world of romance, magic and giant sword-wielding armor suits! Now Van, pilot of the famed armor suit Escaflowne; and Hitomi, whose hobby of predicting the future just became a frightening reality, must work together and fight the advanced technology of Zaibach: a force who want to shape Gaea to their visions of "peace". Follow Hitomi in her struggles against both these forces who seek to conquer this world, and her own confused heart.
Both Spirited Away and Escaflowne are about a young and fairly normal girl who finds herself suddenly caught up in the unbelievable world of magic. Both stories focus on the magic, the girl's struggles to cope, and the love that inevitably blooms from it all.
In the lush fantasy world of Earthsea, dragons and humans no longer live together as one due to the greed of humanity. It is in this world that the young Prince Arren lives – a young man who is dejected, tormented, and afraid of the ultimate goal of life: death. After killing his father and stealing an heirloom sword forged by magic, Arren sets forth with his trusty steed into the unknown countryside, experiencing the joys and darkness of mankind. Along with the powerful mage Sparrowhawk, an unlikely friend and his own personal angst, Arren must rediscover his desire to live while evil forces threaten his precious life's existence.
Both Tales from Earthsea and Spirited Away come from Studio Ghibli and don't disappoint in terms of production values - both are lavishly scored and richly animated. These are GORGEOUS to view! Both have the same poignant feel.
If you liked Tales from the Earthsea with its protagonist seeking to run away from his dark inner cursed self, who ends up fighting at the edge of magic to save the world, then Spirited Away's Chihiro's quest to un-curse her parents and escape from the magical alternate realm where she is trapped should resonate with you. And Chihiro's ultimate victory feels as successful as Aaren's redemption.
Both anime heroes each find support and assistance from a new friend who helps to strengthen their resolve and provides valuable clues toward overcoming all obstacles.
If you enjoyed watching either of these films, seeing the other will not disappoint!
Are you keen on the story of a young girl or teen, suddenly sent to a bizarre fantasy world?
Adventure awaits in either one of these titles. Yokho being just a slight less family friendly, but still similar in situation.
A young woman quietly falls to the earth, escorted by a solitary crow. This sort of dream, as many other before have dreamed, comes just before being reborn as a Haibane, a charcoal-winged angel. On the outskirts of the walled-in city lies Old Home, a haven for Haibane to study, live, and learn, while waiting for their chance to ascend to the heavens and escape the confines of their new world. Rakka is the newest inhabitant of Old Home who wants nothing more than to remember her past and discover the secrets of her kind. Together with Reki, Kuu and plenty of other new friends, Rakka will laugh, explore, and search for the meaning of their existence in the process.
Haibane Renmei, like Spirited Away, is set in a world where reality meets fantasy. Angel-like creatures known as the Haibane live in a town that is like any small village. The Haibane themselves also are like human beings, just like how the demons in the bathouses have a human-like quality about them. Also, the main character, Rakka, like Chihiro, is at first new to the town of Glie, but tries to uncover the mysteries surrounding it and how it relates to her being a Haibane.
