Attack on Titan

Attack on Titan

Over a century ago, mankind was devoured by giant beings of unknown intelligence and origin known as Titans – creatures that eat humans alive indiscriminately and for no apparent reason. The remaining population has managed to survive the last hundred years only by building a multi-walled city capable of keeping the Titans at bay, training military recruits to patrol the perimeter and gather intelligence about their mysterious foe. Eren and Mikasa have lived a relatively peaceful life behind the city's walls, but when a massive Titan appears, smashing the outer barrier and unleashing a wave of terror, their lives are brutally changed forever...

Both shows are set in a dystopian world with an ancient threat lurking at the fringes of mankind, and both shows have technology that has progressed in such a way to deal with this threat, mecha in Sidonia, and the three-dimensional manouver device in AoT.

AoT seems to have a much stronger horror theme than Sidonia so far, but I believe anyone who has watched one, will get some enjoyment from the other.

HasseRovdjur HasseRovdjur says...

Both series are rather dystopic, telling the tale of the remnants of humanity living in confined spaces, ever on the lookout for the non-human threat that reduced it to such a state.

And of course, the threat that has not been sighted for so long finally returns, at it is now to take up arms against it and defend the last outpost of the humans in a desperate struggle!

While Sidonia is a futuristic mecha show, and AoT takes place in some fantasy land with rather advanced contraptions, they both have a very similar feel to them due to the plot and focus on military characters. They are also rather gritty and full of action, so if you want something similar, do check the other one out.

murcam murcam says...

Sindonia No Kishi is basically Attack on Space. Giant beings of unknown origin and intelligence have wiped out most humanity creating need for them to adapt. Although so far I think that Sidonia is better and the Gauna are significantly creepier and more threatening. If you like one you'll probably like the other... unless you aren't into mechs.

Yol Yol says...

They've both got the "unnatural force threatening mankind" theme going. They both have intense battle scenes, although one may not be used to the animation in SnK. They share the main protagonist being sort of an underdog, yet possesing some quality that brings him to fame. All in all, if you like one, you'll probably like the other.

-Happy Watching

sothis sothis says...

It's crazy to me that more people haven't recommended this pair. Saying SNK and Titan are similar is the understatement of the year - a straggling subsection of humanity tries to defend itself against a giant, badass enemy that indiscriminately annihilates them, with plenty of horror, gore, and tense moments. The setting (fantasy vs futuristic) and animation (awesome vs kind of bad CG) are the only two things that set these apart.

There is zero reason you wouldn't like one if you liked the other.

ZetsubouKaiji ZetsubouKaiji says...

Humanity has been pushed to the brink of destruction by overwhelming forces they don't understand. Forced to retreat into tiny refuges with limited suppies humanity must struggle to survive their new situation. However, these refuges only provide temporary safety as it isn't long before the threats attack these last bastions of humanity. Will humanity be able to overcome these threats or are they doomed to a painful slow extinction?

Sindonia no Kishi and Attack on Titan have almost the same plot outline. The difference comes in the setting with Attack on Titan taking a medieval setting with a touch of steampunk and Sidonia being a science fiction series. Each show has it's own set of technology with Sidonia including mechs and space combat.

Attack on Titan is hands down the better of these two shows. It has better characters, better pacing and a more interesting story. Knights of Sidonia stumbles on just about all these fronts, but if you like stories that push the characters to the brink of despair then try either of these titles.

Brad Brad says...

A mysterious and overwhelmingly powerful enemy pushes mankind to the brink of extinction, forcing them to retreat into small, enclosed communities in order to survive. But the status quo doesn't last for long, and humanity is backed into a corner and forced to retaliate to protect their future.

The plot in each is pretty much as close asd two shows can get, the only major difference being AoT's medieval setting when compared to Sidonia's sci-fi space setting.

AoT is the better of the two shows by a long shot, but they are so similar that fans of one should definitely check the other out.

ZEROibis ZEROibis says...

Bolth shows are about survivors of humanity fighting against an ememy that has nearly destroyed them. Main character in bolth is different from everyone else and is like a specal weapon to defeat the enemy. In bolth cases the goverment is covering up much of the history of humanity and of the true origins of their civilization. Lastly bolth have great epic battles and exciting action.

snivets snivets says...

Sidonia no Kishi and Attack on Titan both had me on the edge of my seat, trying to figure out if the characters will survive or not. If you like a show where the human race is threatened with extinction by big, bad non-human creatures, then both of these will be right up your alley. Liked one? Be sure to check out the other!

Swerto Swerto says...

Both revolve around some overpowered main character being the only one who can stop this ancient supernatural threat that has plagued humanity for longer than recorded history. Both are superviolent and have many main characters die throughout them. Both have great dubs, great action, and a dark setting. Knights of Sidonia takes place in space in a very battlestar galactica fashion.

Attack on Titan takes place in a fantasy kingdom.

PrincessPlum PrincessPlum says...

Soldiers training together using a special tool or suit, preparing to find an enemy they've never faced or haven't faced in some time. Similar vibe in each, one in a less advanced Earth, one in the future in space.

Great survival animes, Fighting giant creatures (titans in Attack on Titan,Gauna in Knights of Sindonia) with advanced weapons (3D gear in AoT and mecha in KoS)

Red4life Red4life says...

The premise is very similar for both shows. Humanity on the brink of extinction with a kid doing the whole "chosen one thing". Attack on Titan, however, is a bit lighter in story and mood than Sidonia no Kishi which I find darker. So far I have to say I prefer the latter's story a bit more (maybe I'm more into mechas). However, being Sidonia no Kishi a CG anime, I have to say that it's not my favourite style. It's not bad...but it's not the same thing as hand drawn anime. Still, highly recommend both shows (and manga)!

kolakidd kolakidd says...

I actually refered to this as Attack on Titans in space. The stories are pretty similar.

chillst1 chillst1 says...

They basically have the same premise except in one mobile suits are used and in the other assisted grappeling devices are used.

Saincev Saincev says...

Humanity is brought to the brink of extinction by another "creature" who has a specifc weak point. Humanity must come up with a creative way to defeat said creatures in order to survive. Pretty much the plot of AoT and KoS in a nutshell. The MC in both stories have something special about them that allows them to combat the threat. Comrades die, yet there is no time to Mourn and the fight must go on.

So where's the difference? Where AoT has Harpoon Jetpacks and Blades, KoS uses Mechs with Particle Beams and Spears. AoT takes place on Earth and is Primarily using technology from Middle Ages. KoS takes place in the far future aboard a Giant Generation Ship, Sidona. Titans use brute strength to kill. Gaunas (from KoS) have more "sophisticated" methods.

Overall, if you enjoyed the plot of AoT and the feel of the envrionment, KoS is a great subsitute.

wodemaya wodemaya says...

Humanity is cornered by threatening creatures that just so happen to like attacking humans. Humans must gather and create weapons and go out in groups to kill said creatures.

KoS is futuristic with Mechs powered by Hyggs Particles, while AoT has a more medieval setting with 3DMG. The protagonists differ a lot in terms of personality, but they both become leading forces on the battlefield.

Gabbygabby21 Gabbygabby21 says...

Knights of Sidonia is mostly the same execpt they are fighting in space. They both have a future where the entire world lives in one place because of an "alien" creature.

mindlord0013 mindlord0013 says...

Knights of Sidonia and Attack on Titan have a number of similarities. The main difference between the two is the setting. In both series, humanity has been pushed back by a mysterious, bloodthirsty race that sometimes take a humanoid form in shape, if not intelligence. Humanity has to live in a sanctuary, and sometimes drastic measures have to be taken to save the greater number of lives at the cost of a few.The combat is very similar in both shows, fast paced and visually stunning. Neither show glosses over the fact that casulaties are inevitable in these situations, and sometimes characters are killed because of stupid little mistakes - something that is inevitbale in wars against bloodthirsty killing machines. Knights of Sidonia has less gore than Attack on Titan, and appears to be more restrained with its use of graphic violence for shock value - something I feel Attack on Titan has no qualms about. The monsters in each series are equally grotesque in their own rights, though Attack on Titan takes the prize for having a more scary monster (though Knights of Sidonia's monsters are equally as deadly, if not more so.)The main difference between the two shows are the settings and themes. Knights of Sidonia is a sci-fi show, set on a colony ship, with characters piloting mechs to fight an alien species known as gauran (a highly intelligent, giant, shape-shifting species). Attack on Titan is a fantasy show, with the characters using contraptions that basically make them spider-man with swords, fighting against the titular titans - giant humanoid creatures that revel in eating humans. Both shows tend to have themes exploring the idea of a blurred line between humanity and monters, but go about it in different ways. Attack on Titan tends to revolve around greed, gluttony and selfishness vs. the want to protect others, kinship, and selflessness. Knights of Sidonia focuses on the literal, genetic differences between humans and "monsters", as well as the personalities and psychology of particular characters. It also delves into the issue of immortality and extreme longevity, and the philosophical issues that that brings when there are people in a position of power that are also extremely long-lived.

Humanity lives in a bubble, terrified of creatures beyond human understanding. And yet, they send the young and  virile members of society out into the void to gather information. That's the main conflict of both anime. And while one is set in space and the other is set in pseudo-Europe, they share a lot in common.

murder0 murder0 says...

Similar to attack on titan where you follow one character that is for some strange reason way more special than everyone else and throughout the series seems to grow in strength. (That’s the basic explanation on why you'd like it)... They both have a really good story line and an excellent character development only problem is the style of the animation might throw u off.

mathismagic mathismagic says...

Knights of Sidonia can basically be described, plot-wise, as Attack on Titan IN SPACE. The difference is, Attack on Titan's characterization, world building, and plot structure are all much better and, y'know, coherent.

Neon Genesis Evangelion

Neon Genesis Evangelion

In the future, a devastating event known as Second Impact has destroyed Tokyo as we know it, giving rise to Tokyo III - a city under siege by mysterious lifeforms known only as Angels. Mankind's only line of defense are the Evangelions, a set man-made machines piloted by a trio of fourteen year-old teenagers, Rei, Shinji, and Asuka. Both shows involve mechas, aliens and genetic experiments. Gaunas and Angels have a lot in common, just like Evas and Chimeras. And also share the same dark/sad atmosphere.

Dozo Dozo says...

The obviuos: mecha, threat on humanity, kind of clueless main character, and a little gory and dark at times. Then again many other animes have these elements, what I really like about Knights of Sidonia is the way it tells its story and the fact that it is actually interesting and makes you want to know more: what's gonna happen next? What happened before the events of the series? What's the deal with Hoshijiro and Izana? NGE is one of my all-time favorite anime series, so I'm always trying to find something with similar themes or that will get me as excited. So far series that have succeeded at that are Fullmetal Alchemist, Ergo Proxy, Attack on Titan, and Knights of Sidonia is doing a pretty good job so far.

snivets snivets says...

There are many similar elements at play in Sidonia and NGE. From giant, unknown alien entities threatening humankind, to the dark atmosphere, to the way which the storyline examines how the character's personalities drive their (not always good) decisions, I think fans of one will find plenty to appreciate in the other.

Thiswillkillyou Thiswillkillyou says...

After watching both series i think it's obvious that Sidonia was greatly influenced by Neon Genesis, thematically and stylistically. I would recommend NGE if you liked the mecha/existential part of the story portrayed in Sidonia.

Sidonia is far simpler than Neon Genesis in terms of character development and symbology but the similarities are high enough for those who liked Sidonia to check it out.

mathismagic mathismagic says...

If the basic plotting structure of this is 'Attack on Titan IN SPACE' the aesthetics, attitudes, and some of the characters are very much NGE inspired.

Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet

Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet

In the distant future, the human race is on the brink of destruction. Mankind, which now drifts in space aboard a massive, technologically-advanced base known as Avalon, is poised to launch one final, desperate attack against its enemy, the alien race Hideauze. It’s during this battle that Ledo, a mecha pilot, is thrown into a wormhole and sent to an unfamiliar place: Earth, the lost birthplace of humanity said to have turned to ice long ago. Having been saved by the inhabitants of the Gargantia, a fleet of ships that traverses the now-flooded planet, Ledo must come to terms with these primitive people with their backwards language and technology, learn to communicate, and try to find a way back home to his place in the sky.

HasseRovdjur HasseRovdjur says...

Both are futuristic mech-action series telling the tale about humanity engaged in a massive war against an alien enemy. Their societies are militaristic, ever vigilant against their foes. They both feature a male mecha pilot as the central character, and there is some fighting to be had in both.

Of course, Gargantia changes setting pretty fast, but the character interactions and focus on exploring how the setting works are still very much like the one we're seeing in Sidonia.

If you liked either of these anime, chances are that you'd like the other one.

ofall ofall says...

The aliens in both are pretty reminiscent of the other. Deadly, tentacled creatures. The fight between them and humanity are also similar, although you only see a whole lot of the in the first episode of Gargantia.

I found the setting similar also. Although Suisei no Gargantia takes place mostly on earth and Sidonia no Kishi in space, The ships look pretty similar, like tons of buildings stacked and interspersed into a big maze-like enviornment.

Lastly, The main characters in both are seen as outsiders for at least part of both series.

SamIchi SamIchi says...

It's a very similar set up just like almost every mecha/alien type anime. If you enjoyed one, you'll enjoy the other.

kisuitha kisuitha says...

When watching Sidonia I constantly got the feeling that it was very similar to Gargantia.

They both fight octopus like creatures in mechas. They both have societies living in ships. They are both constantly in war.

I also felt that Gargantia explained more about the background of the creatures while Sidonia only concentrated on getting rid of them and never wonder where they were coming from.

Gunbuster

Gunbuster

In the early 21st century, insectoid organisms are invading the galaxy, searching for new stars to house their young. Mankind's only defense lies with space cadets such as Takaya Noriko, daughter of a celebrated admiral killed in battle, and Amano Kazumi, the top of her class. Reasons you might like Gunbuster...

Funkgun Funkgun says...

When your alien foe is in another galaxy, or at least far enough off that you have to make plans to meet them, then you better be prepared in a mecha that can take them down.

Gunbuster is a bit more super robot with thunder kicks than Sidonia which has century old mecha to fight with.

It is an early recommendation but one I had a feeling could work.

HasseRovdjur HasseRovdjur says...

Both mecha shows feature non-humanoid aliens that pose a very serious threat to humanity's survival, and it's up to the brave pilots to defend us against these alien horrors!

Like Funkgun noted, Gunbuster is much more of a super-robot show whereas Sidonia has more of a gritty, "hard" sci-fi feel, but they are certainly similar enough to warrant a recommendation.

ZetsubouKaiji ZetsubouKaiji says...

Humans are forced to defend themselves against aliens that are beyond reason. In both series the aliens pose an overwhelming threat and it's only with human ingenuity that mechs are created capable of fighting the alien menace. Both series involve space travel and the long times it can take to travel to different places in the galaxy which effects the strategies used by the characters.

Gunbusters is a classic giant robot anime with much more impressive mechs. Sidonia tries to be a more dark and depressing story with the characters constantly in fear for their lives and using mechs that are out of date. However, if you like space combat and humans fighting true monsters then try either of the series.

Both of these shows take place on a space colony, have to do with gathering resources and being attacked by an ancient alien race, and have mech fights. If you watch other shows in the "Macross" franchise, you'll be able to draw even more parallels in terms of setting and characterization, with the exception of "Macross 7," which is just silly fun.

The original "Macross" is a bit more drawn-out, dramatic; very much a classic space opera. "Sidonia" is very visceral and raw, an in-your-face type of show. Both are great, though, and well worth the watch if you're up for a similar set-up done very differently.

bmcafee bmcafee says...

Macross is the original "city in a spaceship" anime.  You absolutely cannot help but draw comparisons between Sidonia and Macross.  Obviously, with a higher episode count, and to be honest, much better writing, Macross is superior in just about every way to Sidonia.  The one category in which Sidonia might have the edge is the animation.  Not all episodes of Macross are equal when it comes to animation quality, many having been farmed out to different studios in order to meet deadlines, and although the key episodes are beautiful, some are downright cringe worthy.  However, if you liked Sidonia, its a pretty safe bet you will like Macross, and vice-versa.

Reasons you might like Voices of a Distant Star...

Thiswillkillyou Thiswillkillyou says...

Stylistically they are very similar. Voices of a Distante Star almost looks as if it's a prequel to Sidonia no Kishi at some extent. The first revolves around the romantic connection between a girl that was casted to fight against the aliens and a boy that was left on earth so it doesn't have as many action scenes as Sidonia (the fact that it's only one episode may explain that).

They mechs are very similar in terms of asthetic and they also use 3D animation to portray the characters. If you liked the animation style of Sidonia and don't mind watching drama and romance you should give Voices of a Distant Star a try.

bmcafee bmcafee says...

These two do have some common elements.  Mecha, aliens, 3D CGI, and giant spaceships.  Still, Voices accomplishes more character and story wise in 25 minutes than Sidonia accomplishes in 12 episodes.  But where Voices is extremely focused on the characters, Sidonia is more focused on the world they live in.  Both are beautifully animated, but one is about a future with giant spaceships and mecha, the other is about the people who live in that future.

Macross Frontier

After being threatened by extinction at the hands of alien invaders called the Zentradi, humanity undertook the task of guaranteeing itself a future by launching fleets of colony ships into space. On Macross Frontier, one such fleet, high school student Saotome Alto's life is changed forever: the fleet is suddenly attacked by unidentified creatures while he is performing aerial stunts for a concert by the wildly popular idol Sheryl. Alto quickly finds himself in the cockpit of a new-model fighter struggling to protect Ranka Lee, a young girl he met only hours earlier, from the invaders' swath of destruction. Both are sci fi mechas that take place in space. They both deal with the concept of colonzing spaceships that deal with the tribulations found with suriving in space and fighting an mysterious and powerful alien enemy. They both have their drama, tradgedy and relief which will keep you entertained for the entire series.

If I had to point out some differences, Macross Frontier is a less bleak partially due to the whole music theme that he serious focuses on which I do not think is a bad thing.

Overall Id recomend it especially if you are a fan of the genre

bmcafee bmcafee says...

I have to say that Sidonia is almost a scaled down, simplified version of Macross Frontier.  If you would like to watch a colony ship plagued by alien attacks which are driven off with 3D CGI mecha, then either will do.  However, Macross comes with a pre-fab history which is rich and deep.  You just about can't beat Macross when it comes to detailed sci-fi universe.  You are going to get more of everything with Macross than you will get with the 12 episodes of Sidonia, but still, I enjoyed Sidonia.  If you liked Sidonia, then Macross Frontier is a must.  If you liked Macross F, then you have a good chance of identifying with many of the elements found in Sidonia.

I'm kind of surprised no one has recommended these two as being similar. Both are CG anime by the same studio with the same character designer, so visually they are very similar. The stories aren't that similar but both are a bit dark and deal with the supernatural (aliens are supernatural right??) and focus on a male main character. Both deal with immortality as well.

The main reason for this recomendation is the visuals. If you like the character designs or are looking for another good CG anime then I recommend this. (Although somehow, Sidonia managed to make the character movements appear more natural despite being made before Ajin....what's with the regression.....although the difference isn't that big)

The story follows Nagate, a boy who had been secluded from humanity.. aside from his grandfather. Much like how Suletta was secluded from everyone aside from her Mother. Nagate spent his youth fighting in a mecha simulator. The premise of the story his fighting the Guana, an organism that's sole purpose is to eradicate humanity. Suletta (Currently on Episode 3) hasn't revealed yet why she has borderline mastered her Gundam. There's a love interest in both happen to be of the same sex (kind of). Essentially aside from the plot itself, the storyline (so far) has been fairly similar. I loved the first season of Knights of Sidonia and I've been really enjoying The Witch from Mercury. Highly recommend if you need other sustenance while waiting for the next episode.

Nocturnalgloria Nocturnalgloria says...

Apart from both being mecha, the very peculiar background of the lead characters make these titles a match despite being very dissimilar in tone. For Tanizake from Knights of Sidonia and Suletta from Witch from Mercury, piloting is second nature as they have been doing it from the earliest of ages. More than that, they grew up in an environment with not much in terms of social interaction, having none with people their age. Prior to the events of their respective series, they were close to their parent figures and thus struggle and are challenged by being thrust into a wider world.

The adjustment to living in society is very important, and the sci-fi angle where the bulk of the action takes place in what are effectively space colonies brings these two even closer.
