Slam Dunk

Slam Dunk main image

This is the fantastically popular sports anime that single-handedly restarted the genre! It follows tensai basketman Sakuragi Hanamichi as he takes up basketball to impress a cute girl, and never walks free again. He may not be as good as he thinks he is, but he might just be good enough to help Shohoku to the national level… but then again, the competition has talent of their own, and an equal need to win. Don’t expect Sakuragi, or indeed Shohoku, to win them all.

Regardless of the title and genre of these two shows, they are both very similar. An example would be that both anime have gang members trying to impress girls in different ways. In Slam Dunk it's via basketball, and in Shonan Junai Gumi it's via being hard-working students. And to add to the similarities would be that both shows have a mixture of fighting and comedy; if you liked the fights and humor and one, you would like the other just as much

Moving into a new neighborhood sometimes requires you to conform, in order to get along with the new people around you. Or, you can be like Takashi and make the neighborhood adjust to you! With steely determination and a new blonde perm, Takashi is ready to make himself the top dog of high school delinquents. But facing him is another recent arrival to his new school, with a hairstyle just as rebellious and radical. Faced with the fearsome 3rd year punks as well as this outside challenger, will Takashi be able to realise his dreams of classroom dominance?

If you enjoyed watching Shonan Junai Gumi, you'd definitely enjoy Kyou Kara Ore Wa; hands down. The main plot may be reversed, and the two main characters' relationships are different in the beginning, but the events and genre are alike! The humour, the use of distorted facial expressions, and the violence - it's the same. There's little differences between the two and I cannot stress enough that if you like this one, you'll definitely like the other.
