Last Exile and Shangri-la deal with worlds that are on the verge of destruction because of weather related issues. In both there is a privileged class that is responsible for the suffering of the masses at the hands of the fierce elements. The sci-fi adventure is spiced with mystical allusions and made interesting by a strong supporting cast that gathers around the young leads. Sporting two very similar villains these titles also offer plenty of drama. As a side note, the character design in both was done by Renge Murata which gives them a sense of artistic continuity.

Some may or may not agree... But this anime is definately similar. Both of them show adventure, sadness, and standing up for themselves. Shangri-la is a post-apocolyptic anime about a girl who lives on an island where there is a lot of polution while others live in a fancy mansion and don't have to worry about sickness. Kuniko(MC from Shangri-la) decides to accept her heritage and defend the people she has grown to love no matter the odds.
Secret of Cerulean Sand is about a teenager named Jane who has lost two of her mothers, her birth mother, while giving birth to little Jane. And her step mother of sickness. She has two older brothers, William(her step brother) and George. Both of them care for her a lot but one day George dissapears whille suppositely "Being Executed" for treason. And her brother William really just leaves. Jane goes in search for her brother George following the few things left behind by him, and a mysterious jewel that turned to powder.
In both of these, the girls have to go through a lot. Especially losing the ones they love the most. AND they are both around the same age, Jane is 15 and I think Kuniko is 14. Just a little similarity that no one probably cares about :P
