Shangri-la and No. 6 are about futuristic cities that present themselves as utopias while a large part of the population lives in poor stricken conditions in a harsh environment. These anime use sci-fi with a social message; Shangri-la is more light hearted about it while No. 6 is for the most part very serious.

MADwonderholic MADwonderholic says...

They both involve a comparison between a modern futuristic city and a poor one. The only difference is that the main character in No.6 starts in the futuristic city, while in Shangri-La the main character starts in the poor city. Shangri-La has more of a light-hearted tone than No.6, but both involve the main character trying to take down the futuristic city.

A highly advanced dystopia available to chosen and unfriendly landscape in which our heroes have to live, struggle against government that doesn't want to have anything to do with outsiders, exotic lifeforms threathening humanity, supernatural elements - both Shangri La and No. 6 have all of those and more which I will avoid mentioning in fear of spoiling your experiences.

Both anime have an apocolyptic like world setting, where the government is out of control and causing havoc.

Both take place in a grim future where mankind's abuse of the environment has created a toxic, jungle-infested planet that is difficult to survive in. Both are centered around a young girl who seems on a higher level than the people around her, a peace-loving but adept fighter

snivets snivets says...

These anime are about two young female protagonists with mad fighting skills, battling other humans and trying to survive in a toxic environment filled with giant, poisonous plants. They deal with a very similar premise: that human beings will eventually destroy the environment through their meddling, and the world will fall into resulting chaos. If you dig one, check out the other.

Origin: Spirits of the Past

Origin: Spirits of the Past

Agito was born into a world that is quite different than our own. Many years ago a brilliant researcher attempted to save humanity from its excessively damaged environment by altering the DNA of plants. However, these mentally-awakened plants recognized the inherent threat of humans, and attacked them; the end result was a stalemate between the forest and the few remaining human centers. Agito's home city is green with life because the forest controls it. There is an uneasy peace which is facilitated by a small number of humans that allowed the forest to alter them to be in concert with itself. Being that his father is one of those, Agito's view of the forest is not one of fear but rather one that respects the human dependency. Agito will be challenged to prove this relationship when a random event gives the humans, who still see the forest as an enemy, a new perceived advantage in their war.

In terms of the storyline they both are similar. Both revolve around large parts of the world being inhabited by plants and military/army trying to stop the spread. Both have a very similar visual designs and both plot-lines also have an element of nature having taken over.

Both Shangri-la and Origin are set in a future where mutant/genetically modified plants have taken over the world. If that sort of story appeals to you, or you enjoyed one or the other, I have a feeling you'd also enjoy the other.

Last Exile and Shangri-la deal with worlds that are on the verge of destruction because of weather related issues. In both there is a privileged class that is responsible for the suffering of the masses at the hands of the fierce elements. The sci-fi adventure is spiced with mystical allusions and made interesting by a strong supporting cast that gathers around the young leads. Sporting two very similar villains these titles also offer plenty of drama. As a side note, the character design in both was done by Renge Murata which gives them a sense of artistic continuity.

Both of these shows are about a girl who slowly learns the truth about her post-apocalyptic society with the help of some allies. Tons of action, and the world is interesting in both. Shangri-La may be a bit dated, but I think fans of one would like the other.
