Kazuki Shikimori is a 17-year old junior studying at Aoi Academy, an elite school for the magically gifted. However, unlike enrollment to the school would suggest, his magical prowess is below-average. In fact, he can only use magic eight times in his life, or he will die. But not all is lost: Kazuki's family tree includes the latent genetic material for magical greatness. After that information leaks out, Kazuki suddenly becomes the most popular male student in the school, and girls from powerful magician families begin chasing him to get his genes.
To start, both of these anime are great shows. Now, in both of these series there is a love interest. Surprisingly in both of them the girl loves the boy more so than the other way around--in the beginning. As time moves on the love becomes more two-sided.
Do you like powers and magic? Good, because in both of these series there is a male protagonist that is really powerful. Plus, the female in each series is headstrong. The only real difference is that in Shaman King the girl is also controlling, but in Maburaho the girl is just stubborn. So, 'huff....huff' if you liked one of these shows then you would probably like the other.
Long ago the infamous Gol D. Roger was the strongest and most powerful pirate on the seas. As he was about to be executed he revealed that he hid all of his wealth, including the legendary treasure known as One Piece, on an island at the end of the Grand Line - a treacherous and truly unpredictable sea. Monkey D. Luffy is a spirited, energetic and somewhat dim-witted young man with a very big dream: to find One Piece and become the Pirate King! However Luffy is no ordinary boy, as when he was younger he ate one of the Devil's Fruits and gained its power to become a Rubber Man. Now in this grand age of pirates Luffy sets out to gather a crew and sail to the most dangerous sea in the world so that he can fulfill his dream... and maybe even his appetite!
Five years have passed since Goku and his friends defeated Piccolo Jr. and restored peace to the planet. Gohan - Goku's son - and a variety of good, bad, and morally ambiguous characters are back, and perpetually not ready for action! Aliens, androids, and magicians all hatch evil plots to destroy the world and it's up to Goku to save the Earth once more - that is, once he and his comrades train plentifully in preparation. Enemies will become friends and power levels will rise to unimaginable levels, but even with the help of the legendary Dragon Balls and Shen Long will it be enough to save Earth from ultimate destruction?
The comparison between Shaman King and Dragon Ball Z is simple - or maybe not - but both characters (Yoh and Goku) show us that there is always a way to do the right thing, even when the world is against you and your opponent is stronger. Plus, they manage to put a smile on your face at the same time.
I like the idea of a world beyond our world that we touch and see, where there are things unknown such as spirits, energies, and even planets. I think that there are a lot of unknown things in our world that are beyond our senses.

Apart from being two long animes that failed to give out a clear conclusion, Shaman King and D.Gray-Man resemble each other in many aspects. They are each a story of a boy on a long way to achieve a single, simple goal -- to keep the world as it is. The two protagonists, Allen and Yoh, are both aware of the existences of the powerful antagonists, Earl and Hao, who plan to destroy the world. To face them Allen and Yoh need more power -- and they do so by making friends, undergoing trainings, and experiencing more battles, all step by step. If you have watched either and liked the themes it presented, you might want to consider the other. If you liked Shaman King or D.Gray-Man simply for the lighthearted or dark atmosphere, this recommendation is not for you.
