Synopsis:

In the revolutionary Meiji period, Japan is undergoing enormous political change. It is a time when vagabonds and terrorists will use any method to prevent the modernization of their country, even if it means trampling on the innocent in the process. In such a time, Himura Kenshin, a wandering samurai, has dedicated his life to protecting the weak and desperate peasants from those who would oppress them. However, Kenshin has a dark past which threatens to destroy the values he is fighting for. When he meets his new friends Kaoru, Sanosuke, and Yahiko, and tries to build a peaceful life with them, events conspire against him. Can Kenshin overcome the demons within and without, and finally ensure the peaceful future that Japan deserves?

Both series are about badasses with a sensitive side who try to journey on a quest of love and peace, but find that their past catches up with them inevitably. If you liked one, you'd surely like the other.

lindapearl

Yu Yu hakusho and Kenshin main characters fight and protect the weak and their beloved ones. Both the main characters have a dark past that they don't want to face.

Adventures of Kotetsu

Adventures of Kotetsu

Linn Suzuki made her way to Tokyo in search of her elder brother but found trouble instead. Lovely Detective Miho Kuon comes to Linn's aid as she is accosted by thugs, and thus begins their adventures together. Linn must endure geeky magicians, fierce tree spirits, and her 100-year-old master all while trying to stay clothed! Full of action and fanservice, Kotetsu is a debacle of martial arts mayhem.

Although The Adventures of Kotetsu were not as action packed or even remotely as long as Rourouni Kenshin, both had an interesting look into sword based martial arts, ancient Japan, and the internal workings and politics in a fictional Japan. And all the kick ass swordfights are kewl too :p

Air Master

Air Master

Aikawa Maki, a high school student (with a reputation of being an exceptional street fighter), is known on the streets as Air Master. Standing at seven feet tall, she has the ability to seemingly fly through the air. Trying to attain the highest level of excitement and tension, she searches for stronger opponents. Will she find them or will they find her first, as they fight it out in the aerial arena?

Both Airmaster and Kenshin are, more or less, fighting anime with interesting opponents and unique ideas on fighting styles. If you like anime about kicking ass, try both. Airmaster is a bit less epic and dramatic, sure, but the character interaction and comic relief make up for that.

Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto

It is the era of Bakumatsu – the last years of the shogunate. They come across a mysterious young swordsman, Akizuki Youjirou, who seems to be burdened with a dark past. Thrown around by currents of history, powerful people from different factions and personal relations, Akizuki tries to fulfill his mission to destroy an ancient, cursed relic, the Lord’s Head, which has caused chaos and bloodshed for thousands of years.

Both Kenshin and Bakumatsu involve a young samurai that is traveling in Japan because of his past. Both of the main characters carry special swords along with them that are very important to their fights. Along with the great action scenes in both there is a bit of romance and some comic relief, moreso in Rurouni Kenshin but still a little in Bakumatsu.

Nohansen

A traditional romance narrates the extraordinary exploits of heroes, sometimes interwoven with love stories and religious allegories.

Rurouni Kenshin is the romantic tale of a Meiji-era swordsman. Its hero is a knight-errant, a bumbling wanderer haunted by his past. Vision of Escaflowne takes place in a remote, enchanted setting and deals with romantic notions like fate, fortune and impossible love amidst a background of war.

Both series defy the convention of "anime for boys" and "anime for girls" by combining elements that will please the romantics and the action junkies.
