The divine mandate of society has always played a role in shaping the lives and deaths of those who breathe under her care; yet while being subjected to this mandate, can these existences break away and stand on their own? Such is the tale of Romeo x Juliet and of Victorian Romance Emma.
They are wonderful tales of differing golden eras (Shakespearean and Victorian respectively) that gave birth to countless classics that have been immortalized for eternity. A love that cannot be, social conflicts against the individual, and the repression of one's own true self ultimately leads to the question of manifesting one's own destiny. These are what forms the foundations of Victorian Romance Emma and Romeo x Juliet, as viewers of contemporary times, these classics embody the unison of the anime realm and golden eras of literature. Thus, finding fulfillment in one series certainly results to gratification in the other.
The responsible Sophie led a relatively normal life, safe within the walls of the hat shop in which she works; for outside, it is rumored, the evil wizard Howl roams the land in his mobile black castle. After a chance and mystical encounter, poor Sophie finds herself transformed by a spell which makes her appear to be an old woman, and thus embarks on an adventure to find Howl’s castle and put an end to her curse. A mystical world of talking flames, sentient scarecrows and magic aplenty awaits those who seek the legendary Howl...
If you liked Romeo x Juliet you might want to check out Howl's Moving Castle. What made the plot of Romeo x Juliet so good was the underlying struggle of the two lead roles trying to develop a relationship that most people said couldn't work. Howl's Moving Castle is the same- with Howl and Sophie being from two very different backgrounds. Also, the scenery and unique flavors of both these anime are similar. Gonzo spices things up in RxJ with a floating city and flying horses, while Miyazaki uses a walking castle and a talking fire in his piece. And the last plus to watching Howl's Moving Castle- it's short... so you don't have to sit through an entire series to decide if you like it or not!
Gentle Himeko and reserved Chikane were born into very different backgrounds, but still became the best of friends. Their fates, they would soon come to discover, are intertwined in a fashion that they can't possibly imagine -- they are the reincarnations of two priestesses who once sealed the god of darkness Orochi in their past lives. Set to revive again, his giant robot-riding agents have set out to destroy the girls, one of whom is Himeko's friend who is in love with her. Riddled with memories of their past lives, the two try to survive long enough to cast the seal on Orochi again...
This may sound awfully strange, (KnM is a mech-yuri), but it's undeniable: there are several similarities between these two, despite sizable plot differences.
People whose feelings are forbidden, being forced to fight each other. Tragic endings, still leaving a glimmer of hope. Young love, reaching maturity.
There may be many differences… but I think you'd enjoy both.
It's been seven years since Yuuichi Aizawa returned to the city he once lived in as a child. Though many things happened to Yuuichi in his past, he can only remember bits and pieces. His parents left Yuuichi in the care of Akiko once again, and this time, he will attend the same school as his cousin Nayuki. Many different girls appear before him, and some of them seem to know him from his past. Yuuichi must now recover his memories of the dark secrets that he erased from his heart, before he loses his precious ones.
RxJ is a great twist on the timeless tale. I definitely recommend it to any fans of Kanon. It has a good pace, but it's not difficult to keep up. And of course a beautiful love story with lots of action mixed in.
Kanon is officially my favorite. It seems to have everything. It's alternatingly hilarious and super-sad/bittersweet and there's plenty of action. And the animation is equally gorgeous!
Yori Yuki has loved his twin sister ever since he can remember. While his parents brushed it off as a child’s fantasy, he always knew it was true love; but because it is incest, taboo, a forbidden love, he did his best to eliminate those feelings. 15 years have gone by and his feelings never wavered; in fact, they have grown stronger. He’s watched his sister Iku grow up and become a beautiful woman, and now, he can no longer contain his feelings – Yori confesses. Yet even if Iku reciprocates his feelings, that doesn’t change the fact that they’re brother and sister. Can forbidden love last?
Alright so i know this might sound a little bit weird but if you are pretty lienient on animes, then i think if you liked "Romeo x Juliet" then you would like "I Love My Younger Sister" and also vice versa.
The animes may not sound too similar at first, but both of them are about two lovers who want to be together, but their love is forbidden. But, while one couple (Romeo x Juliet) is trying to find a way for them to be together, the other couple (I Love My Younger Sister) are trying to stay apart from each other.
If you are open to animes, mainly speaking towards "I Love My Younger Sister", then i think you would like both animes =)
