Both anime deal with young adults having to face alien invaders in giant mecha. If you enjoy this basic concept there is a good chance you will enjoy both Robotech and Gunbuster.

War in the future is rarely a beautiful thing. In the case of The New Generation Saga of Robotech and Starship Troopers, both series draw you into the human element of what really happens in War. While Starship Troopers shows the 'fresh meat' aspect of what it is like to be a true grunt soldier, The New Generation: Robotech completes the picture with what a soldier without an army can do. Do you continue fighting? True strength and mettle on the battlefield can be seen in Jhonny Rico and the ensemble cast of TNG: R. Jhonny and Scott Bernard also have to deal with loss and what it truly means to take the reigns of leadership when there is no other choice. Great battlesuit mecha action in both as well.

Humanity is fighting a force that threatens it's extermination.

In Mospeada it is massive numbers of an alien race called the Inbit, in Attack on Titan it is massive biped humanoids called titans.

In both series mankind is relegated to much smaller numbers and the loss of most of their land.

Both of these series start with hopelessness at the hands of the enemy.

There is almost nothing to compare Macross to, but Macross, but because I can't have a title that is related, I guess I will go with another Mecha title that had pop music playing durring combat.

Sure Mospeada is a lot older, but the bones are there for a fantastic series. Even having it's own pop star as a chracter in it.

Also, if you saw GCM back in the day and have been keeping up with POP Mecha, you owe it to yoourself to try out Delta.
