A mysterious abandoned alien spaceship crashes to Earth, offering an unknown and mysterious technology known as Robotech. Humanity unites to rebuild the spaceship, but on the day of its unveiling the rebuilt ship, now renamed the SDF-1, and the rest of the planet are attacked by an unknown alien race of giants called the Zentradi. In the first attack both military and civilians are forced to flee into deep space. The young Rick Hunter, who gets accidentally sucked into the war visiting his friend Lieutenant Fokker on the day of the attack, is faced with some difficult choices. As an ace pilot he could help out defending their new space-based home, or should he instead wait it out on the sidelines? If that isn't enough he also has to deal with his love for the mesmerizing Lynn Minmay, a young girl also pulled against her wishes into the conflict.
In the distant future, mankind has mastered space and spread empires across the galaxy. While many choose to colonize distant planets, others choose to remain amidst the stars, ultimately giving rise to a new brand of humanity known as the Abh. Both genetically and culturally different from their Earth-dwelling peers, the Abh soon find themselves engaged in a bloody war that rages across hundreds of planets and set out to restore peace by means of conquest. Enter Jinto, a nobleman and ambassador of the recently acquired Hyde system whose duty is to represent his peoples' interests and rule on the Abh's behalf. In order to be officially coronated to this position, a cold-but-beautiful Abh princess named Lafiel arrives at Hyde to escort him back to the empire's capital. When they are suddenly attacked by an anti-Abh liberation front, however, the festivities are cut short, and the two must flee for their lives against all odds.
Have you ever thought about watching more science fiction that isn't necessarily about huge transforming planes like in Robotech? If so, consider Crest of the Stars, which has a love story that evolves in a unique universe where man also constantly tries to flap his wings. Crest of the Stars is also centered around the Abh, an evolution of man that has adapted to life in space, which tries to protect man from himself.
Both animes have a militay + sci-fi theme and both animes center around the love story of 2 protagonists.
While Robotech is more action oriented, Crest of the stars is more about the relationship between the protagonists.
Crest of the stars also lacks a real hero.
In the future, a devastating event known as Second Impact destroyed Tokyo as we know it, giving rise to the current day Tokyo III, a city under siege by mysterious lifeforms known only as Angels. Mankind's only defense are Evangelions, man-made machines piloted by Rei, Shinji, and Asuka, all who are the tender age of fourteen. The fate of Japan and the entire world now lie with these children, though they might not have the power to save the most important thing of all: each other.
Both Robotech and Neon Genesis center around the fight in giant mecha vs invaders. In Robotech's case from outer space, in Neon Genesis' case it is a bit more complicated.
Robotech is more straightforward action, while Neon Genesis tries to delve a bit deeper into the reasons for fighting and humanity.
Robotech and NGE go together quite well. Though Robotech has more of a romantic side to it, and NGE has a bit more of a dark side. Asuka from NGE somewhat reminds me of Lynn Minmei from Robotech because even with a sure of themselves exterior, on the inside they are somewhat insecure. Misato from NGE is also a similar character to Lisa Hayes from Robotech, both a little protective of the male leads, be it for different reasons. Both are full of action, and drama.
The year is Universal Century 0079 and mankind is yet again at war. The space colony Side 3 has declared itself the Principality of Zeon and has separated itself from the Earth Federation. In a raid on the colony Side 7, Zeon troops force a band of civilians, military recruits and one green ensign to escape on a previously unseen class of ship with prototype Federation mobile suits. Among them is Amaru Ray, who piloted the Gundam during the raid on Side 7. Unfortunately, his mastery of it earns him the responsibility of using it in the war against Zeon...
Both Robotech and Gundam involve a space epic, mecha technology and battles. Both of these can also be considered anime mecha/space classics, being the forerunners of the genre.
The stories in each show may be different, but there's one thing that they have in common and that is giant mechs. If you liked mech series, you'd easily love this series as well.

This part of Robotech is in based on the Macross universe. As such watching Macross Plus might appeal to you if you enjoyed Robotech, while if you enjoyed Macross Plus it might be fun to see a different interpetation of the Macross universe.
