Both of these anime feature a collection of people with special abilities; in Ghost Hunt they are all psychics of differing types and in Rental Magica they are all mages of various branches of magic. Both series follow the groups as their companies take on various cases to solve.
Ghost Hunt is the darker series with a strong splash of horror, whereas Rental Magica is a lot lighter with more of a harem feel. However both series have a similar premise with an underlying mystery surrounding the central male character.
Kazuki Shikimori is a 17-year old junior studying at Aoi Academy, an elite school for the magically gifted. However, unlike enrollment to the school would suggest, his magical prowess is below-average. In fact, he can only use magic eight times in his life, or he will die. But not all is lost: Kazuki's family tree includes the latent genetic material for magical greatness. After that information leaks out, Kazuki suddenly becomes the most popular male student in the school, and girls from powerful magician families begin chasing him to get his genes.
"To take ones weakness, and throw it to the darkness. Only then one can truly be considered man." ~Quan Xlo~
Look beyond the echiiness of Maburaho and what do you have? A man struggling with a life and death weakness. In Rental Magica, a mans strength will also prove to be his weakness bringing him closer and closer to the limits. While both are incredibly different in their weakness the struggles and risks stay the same. Whether it be to save a friend.. or a lunchbox. lol
When the students of class 2-A at the all-girls Mahora Academy head back to school, they are expecting a new year as usual. What they get is a new homeroom teacher... who's 10 years old! As if being a genius isn't enough, Negima is a mage. As part of his training to be a Magister Magi, he must succeed at teaching - without anyone finding out he's a magician! Can Negi keep his talents a secret from the girls who just adore the cutest new addition to their academy? Through demon attacks, magical enemies, and English tests, Negi will put all his talents to the test to be the best teacher he can and achieve his goal of Magister Magi.
If magic is right up your street, then both series fully accomodate that aspect. Through in the obligatory female sidekick who helps the main character and an obvious love-triangle and the rest, means that having watched one, it's easy to enjoy the other.
