Entranced with the viceral beauty of Redline? Enjoyed the racing action and high contrast detailed animation? Want more from the same creators?

Check out Lupin III Jigen's Gravestone. It is a gritty Lupin tale that requires no former viewing of Lupin to enjoy it.

Also, if you saw Gravestone first and you liked it, Redline is a must see. One of the great 'animation' anime. What this means is, it is a gorgeous title. Cel drawn glory with a flair for cinematic vision. Both titles have a lot of action and Redline also throws in a good romance as well.

HasseRovdjur HasseRovdjur says...

Both anime are stylish, action-packed with great car scenes and other action scenes, and neither shy away from fanservice. Redline is more of a high-octane race romp while Jigen's Gravestone has a lot of noir to it, but they are sufficiently similar for me to second Funkgun's recommendation by doing one of my own.

Speed Racer

Speed Racer

Speed Racer drives the fabulous Mach 5 in race after race, although the prize money isn't his true goal: he seeks to be the best racer in the world, and to defeat the mysterious Racer X (not knowing that Racer X is actually his long lost older brother, Rex Racer)! The races don't take place upon the boring circular tracks that one might expect; instead, they tend to involve the countryside, and rough and dangerous terrain. This is where the Mach 5's special features, such as super traction tires and jumping struts come in very handy. Speed must also deal with villains ranging from unscrupulous racers to thieves and spies, but he has the help of Trixie, his little brother Spridle, and the pet monkey ChimChim along the way.

The obvious comparisons exist between Speed Racer and Redline in that both are about racing with futuristic vehicles (Redline is in many ways a tribute to Speed Racer) and the lengths to which the main character will go to achieve victory. The joyriding along the way just keeps things interesting.

The recommendation here is chiefly for the short "World Record". Both "World Record" and Redline were directed by Takashi Koike, and have a very similar look - angular, ugly bodies, and the like. Each also involve a protagonist pushing himself to the limit to suceed in a sporting event in a science fiction future which presents more than a few complications. Redline far exceeds "World Record" in animation, but if you liked one, the other is probably worth a look.

Last Exile

Last Exile

Racing and amazing characters are hard to come by but these 2 series deliver. Redline focuses way more on the racing aspect than Last Exile but both have deep underlying plot to them that is explored as well. Last Exile explores this side of the story more than Redline so the 2 anime still focus on the same things only switched which detail of the plot they focus on. Check both out as I'm sure you'll enjoy one if you liked the other.

JP from Redline and Isamu from Macross couldn't be more alike! Both men are brash, daring, and will do anything for their passion that is physically possible. Sure JP is a car racer and Isamu loves to pilot mecha but both take everything to the limit to try and reach that one goal they have for their passion. It helps that both men have a lovely love interest that will help them along the way with their goals as well. Macross has more of an interesting story to suck you in than Redline does but if you are looking for a fast paced and action packed adventure in space check out one if you liked the other.

Steamboy

Steamboy

As London prepares for the first World Expo, the young Ray Steam receives a package containing the Steam Ball, a small and incredibly powerful engine containing hyper-pressurized steam. Developed by Ray’s father and grandfather in America under the supervision of (and funded by) the O’Hara Foundation, the Steam Ball could prove to be an asset to civilization or a great danger. But after Ray finds out that the Steam Ball must not fall into the O’Hara Foundation’s hands, he sets forth on a mission to keep the item safe and away from those who would use it to fuel a brutal war...

Both movies are all about dazzling the viewer with spectacular setpieces in favor of any kind of storyline or character development. They're enjoyable enough if you go in for the visuals alone but neither movie will really leave a lasting impression otherwise.

Akira

Akira

Following the disaster wrought upon the world by a mysterious being called ‘Akira’, Neo Tokyo is now in social and economic turmoil. In such a decaying city, feisty Kaneda and his shy friend Tetsuo survive by running around in a biker gang, chasing local rivals and generally evading the police. Everything changes, however, when Tetsuo crashes into a strange-looking boy during a bike chase and the military ends up taking him away. When he eventually returns to his friends, he’s no longer the same weak little boy they always knew – in fact, a military experiment has turned him into something beyond human imagination. While the military is intent on reclaiming its specimen at any cost, Tetsuo is sick of being bullied around and is about to show everyone, including his friend Kaneda, exactly who is boss.

When i think of gorgeous animation and incredible sound, I think of either of these titles.

They are great gateway anime, and have strong sci-fi astetics.

If you liked one, try the other.

Both of these titles are highly stylized sharp in contrast and possess deep crisp lines in art.

The titles are not similar, but both revolve around action and vehicles.

Both are also one shot titles. If you really dug Redline's art style, you might enjoy an 80's take on labor of love visuals.

Venus Wars

Venus Wars

Set in the 21st century on a recently terraformed Venus, Venus Wars is the story of a war between two opposing nations, and the effect it has on a group of teenagers. Dark and gritty, with an air similar to that of Akira, it focuses on coming of age during the midst of a planet's devastating war.

Redline and The Venus Wars are both wonderfully animated though the heavily saturated art style of Redline makes it uniquely stand out. Both movies have a dark-haired, leather jacket wearing, young male racer as the lead. In The Venus Wars you have Hiro and his monobike, and in Redline it's JP and his Trans-Am. While Redline is able to focus on racing and its corrupt underworld, The Venus Wars shifts away from the sport and shows how the racers and crew cope with the hardships of war. There is more focus on coming-of-age with Hiro as he is portrayed as younger than JP. In many ways, it feels like the punk monobike racers in The Venus Wars could have ended caught up in a similar lifestyle portrayed in Redline if their world wasn't abruptly turned upside-down by war.

Both in Garo: Vanishing Line and Redline the main characters have something with driving cool vehicles plus both characters are badasses.
