Five Star Stories and Lodoss War have a remarkably similar feel, from the epic nature to the fantasy storyline, and narrator who leads us along the way. There really isn't much else to say except check this out.

Kyo Kara Maoh!

Kyo Kara Maoh!

Upon trying to save a friend from bullies, Shibuya Yuuri finds his head in the unlikeliest of places -- the toilet. Like a flash, Yuuri is then inadvertently sucked in, transporting him somewhere else! In this unfamiliar world of flying skeletons and magic, he is informed by a group called the Mazoku that he is to be the next Maou -- ruler of the kingdom! With harrowing and embarassing situations ahead, can our hero swallow his pride and lead a war against the common people when he can't even tell the difference between a slap in the face and a marriage proposal?

The main characters of both are rather headstrong, reckless, but pure in heart, and that's how they end up with their hero status in their fantasy worlds.

Legend of Basara

Legend of Basara

In ancient medieval Japan, the people are oppressed by a brutal emperor and his four children, with no hope for the future… until the prophet Nagi proclaimed that a child born on a day would be their savior. Twins were born that day, a boy, Tatara, raised from birth to be Japan’s savior, and a girl, Sarasa. This is her story: a story of great personal loss, tragic romance, and a resilient unbreakable will.

Like Lodoss War, Legend of Basara is another serious anime series that is set in a fantasy realm. The story is a fairly good one as well. If you liked one of these anime, you are sure to enjoy the other.

Mobile Suit Gundam 08th MS Team

Mobile Suit Gundam 08th MS Team

War between the Earth Federation and Zeon has ground to a bloody standstill, and both sides eagerly seek a quick resolution. Among these is Ensign Shiro Amada, a young mobile suit pilot for the Federation assigned to the 08th mobile suit division in the heart of the Vietnamese jungle. The members of his team include Karen, a hot-headed pilot and part time mechanic; Sanders "The Reaper," a pilot with a reputation for getting the people in his unit killed; Eledor, an aspiring musician, flirt, and communications officer for the team; and Mikel, the love-struck driver for the team's command vehicle. As the gravity of war bears down on their shoulders, they must struggle to keep their sanity amidst a chaotic battlefield that continually tests their wit, focus, and resolve.

I recommend this series because it's main character is also niave enough to think he can save everyone, good and bad, and is willing to do anything to further that goal. Though the fighting and setting are vastly different, I feel that those who liked lodoss's approach to the war will appreciate the politics and the characters in this series.

Sorcerer Hunters

The Sorcerer Hunters spend their days imprisoning magic users who've decided to use their powers for evil. But now, they've become the hunted as the ancient wizard Zahha Torte seeks to take control of the world by unleashing the God of Destruction--a god that lies dormant inside one of the Hunters!

Ultimately, Record of Lodoss Wars and Bakuretsu Hunters are both about a group of high fantasy warriors and magicians fighting to depose dangerous magicians. Lodoss is a lot more series(until later in the Bakuretsu series) but both share the distinction of being two of the more well known high fantasy anime out there.
