After Bruce Lee's demise in 1973, the Hong Kong film industry was left with a void it tried to fill with a host of Bruce clones that emulated Lee's "cocky hero" persona. But in 1978, Jackie Chan stepped out of Bruce's shadow and fashioned a new type of hero: the "clown hero".

Ranma Saotome and Dragon Ball's Goku are protagonists in the mold of Jackie Chan. Like Jackie, they are not invincible: they get hurt. They smile, even crack jokes, in the middle of a fight and "where [Bruce] kicks high, [they] kick low."

Dragon Ball and Ranma 1/2 fall in the kung fu comedy genre that became Jackie Chan's signature after Snake in the Eagle's Shadow. Both series are all about action, adventure and fun. So there's only one thing left to say:

The hero is dead! Long live the clown!

One of the obvious reasons to link DBZ and Ranma is the humor; they both share the same hilarious dirty-old-man humor. And both are mainly focused on fighting.

Ranma 1/2 and Dual both have the general theme of a boy with too many girlfriends!

Full Metal Panic!

Full Metal Panic!

Gonzo does it again with this action-packed mecha comedy. She's an ordinary high school girl. He's a counterterror agent assigned to protect her from those who would steal the information locked in her mind. OK, so she's not so normal after all. Armored Slave battles and lovers' spats abound as Sousuke and his comrades try to track down the mysterious Gauln before it's too late.

The awkward romance is the same, only with mecha instead of martial arts... dunno what you think but sosuke's bout as good as ranma at showing affection. Though the romance scenes are few, they are worth it

Tender young hearts and wacky martial arts styles. How could you go wrong? Though the battles are more comedic than tense, Ranma is chock full of them.
