Working together as a group, the characters in Outlaw Star and Burst Angel manage to get through all sorts of situations. Both start out very episodic and gain more of a story as they continue. There's a bit of gunslinger action and some mecha in both, though Outlaw Star includes some magic as well. The main characters are also very similar.

Outlaw Star and Arcadia of My Youth are all about space operas spiced with rebel ships and plenty of action to boot. Both are seasoned with plenty of cheese and take place in a distant future in which several factions are in conflict. Outlaw Star has plenty of humour and does not take itself too seriously for the most part while Arcadia of My Youth is greatly dramatic but there are enough space related battles going on to assure that these titles could share the same fanbase.

Both of these anime series have 2 major aspects in common. The first is the flight aspect of the show (although Outlaw Star is in space where Last Exile is int the sky). The second aspect is a "lost girl" this being that a female character is found and put under the responsibility of the main characters.

Though contrast arises from the difference in setting (low technology fantasy setting in the case of Orphen and high science fiction space exploration atmosphere in the case of Outlaw Star), the feel of both animes is, in many ways, quite similar. Both focus on an assertive protagonist who chooses to cut himself off from the standard roles of his world, but learns to rely on others in order to accomplish his goals. The result is two stories that end up converging in a similar fashion. If you like one and don't mind a different genre, you should look into watching the other.
