Synopsis:

One OVA is a fairly confusing, but beautiful look at the life of Orihara Kouhei, and promises that he has made in his childhood. In each of the 4 episodes, more of the mystery of Kouhei's past, and relationships with his fellow students is revealed. Much more cannot be said about the plot without giving major spoilers. Based upon a popular PC game.

I''s OVA

Would you remember a promise you made ten years ago? This central question of promises, of memories, and of love -- this is the question that plagues a group of friends in Japan: a young and very talented girl who is well on her way to becoming a superstar, an average guy with an eye for beauty, and a girl from their past. She has returned from a trip to the USA because she remembers a promise they all made ten years ago.. but ten years is a long time, and memories are easily forgotten. Who knows what could come from this reunion...

Mysterious people and promises made long long ago... do you remember? Just like the the girls in ONE the people in this OVA starts remebering promises they made long long ago. They try to remember what the promis really was about and if they don't will the whole world disappear? This is truly a "look alike" to ONE so check it out!

One and I''s OVA both deal with memories from the past that are forgotten, and wanted to remember. One definitely is more beautiful and mysterious, while I''s is far more based in fanservice. But both are interesting.

Kanon

Kanon

For Aizawa Yuuichi, returning to the town where he spent his childhood has been an unusual affair. Yuuichi, it seems, has forgotten his memories of the past, including encounters with several young ladies who would love nothing more than to see him again. As the days pass, flickers of the past began to surface, revealing more and more of the dark events that once came to be. As the reuniting continues, Yuuichi soon starts to realize that his past may be far more complex than he once believed it to be...

If you enjoyed the mysterious qualities of One, especially issues dealing with one's past, but wanted more of a plot and story, Kanon is definitely for you. Kanon is chock full of confusion and mystery as well, though with much more dialogue (haha), as well as a bit more cuteness. I do think you'd like it if you liked One.

Mizuiro

Mizuiro

As children, Ken, Yuki, and Hiyori were the best of friends. But like a flash, the companions were torn apart when Hiyori mysteriously vanished without warning. Now, as young adults, Ken and Yuki are in for a surprise when Hiyori returns, but in a manner that they would never think to expect -- falling out of Ken's closet? And what's worse is that she appears to be a ghost! Armed with newfound curiosity, the trio try to remember what happened in their past, and why their long-lost friend has suddenly reappeared...

One and Mizuiro admittedly have two different tones: Mizuiro being light hearted and comedic, while One is very mysterious and almost confusing. However, both have a similar theme: mysteries of the past that need to be revealed. I think if you liked the artwork in either, you'd appreciate the other, as well.. as well as the romance side of things.

Munto

Munto
  • OVA (1 ep x 52 min)
  • 2003

Although the worlds of heaven and earth used to exist as one, they are now seperated by the boundaries of time and space. As the towers of heaven begin to fall, Munto, the magical king, descends to earth in a seemingly futile attempt to find the chosen one who can stop the worlds from being destroyed.

Animation-wise, I was reminded of Munto when I watched One. Things like the reflections of puddles, the strange camera angles, the falling of snow, all were indicative of things in Munto, and the reason why I liked Munto so much. Watch it for its crystal clear animation.

She and Her Cat

She and Her Cat
  • OVA (1 ep x 5 min)
  • 1999

As the seasons pass, a lone stray cat reminisces of life with his master. He talks of the small passions of their time together, and how their shared affection gives them each a reason to be alive. Speaking both of love gained and love lost, he chronicles the eternal nature of their bond, as despite their own respective heartaches they still have each other. The two converse in a touching tale of the true strength of friendship in the face of hardship.

There is a striking similarity between the Makoto Shinkai's works and One. Being somewhat melancholic and lyrical they focus more on capturing the mood of particular scenes than complex story or characters.
