Synopsis:

Dr Kenzo Tenma is a genius surgeon working in post-Cold War Germany who has a bright future ahead of him. He is admired by his colleagues, loved by his patients, and due to marry his boss' daughter, the beautiful Eva Heinemann. One day, when two patients in desperate need of emergency surgery are wheeled into his hospital, Tenma faces a terrible choice of saving the orphaned boy who came first or the mayor of Düsseldorf, whose recovery would raise the hospital's profile and boost his own career. Against the demands of his superior, Tenma does what he believes is right and saves the child. However, his decision not only damages his prospects, but unleashes a chain of events so horrific that it might have come from the depths of his worst nightmares. Laden with guilt, Tenma begins a journey across Germany in search of a formidable young man who will challenge his morals, his love for life, and his very sanity.

Monster and Bakumatsu Kikansetsu are two anime aimed at anime fans looking for a deeper story with a dark atmosphere. While Bakumatsu does have some romance which Monster doesn't have, the flow is very alike and there's plenty of mystery and even a similar sense of evil.

There's the surgery element, but also more than that. Both doctors of their respective series are respectable and free thinking individuals. The stories of each series both have a overall mystery that begs for a resolution.

Boogiepop Phantom

Boogiepop Phantom

Boogiepop is more disconnected and hard to follow than Monster, a more linear anime, but both look into the darkside of human nature and psychology and are thus linked.

Both anime contain monsters, while Monster is more realistic Darker than Black is more surreal and urban. Monster may have an old style of drawing but the storyline is well worth it.

Her grandfather's prominent position and the affection of the scientist Daedalus have left her more free will than is normally allowed, but Re-l has started to question the sanctity of the city and the citizens' perfect way of life. With mysterious beings known as proxies causing havoc and a man named Vincent causing great influence on her life, Re-l must travel outside of the city to find the answers she seeks and discover the mystery behind "the awakening".

If you have any knowledge of Enlightenment thinking you will absolutely love Ergo proxy. Both it and monster reveal philisophical truths of human nature. Ergo Proxy is an anime revolving around a post apocolyptic world where a "1984" like society controls every action of the people within it. If you are familar with the works of Orwell and Enlightenment thinkers such as locke and rousseau, you will love this anime.
