Although Gurren Lagann is much frendlier in tone, both it and Metropolis share similarities. Robotics fans will enjoy either anime, as Metropolis has androids as characters, and Gurren Lagann has mecha. Both are sad stories, where friends are parted because of death. In both stories the world is a metropolis and it starts to deterioate as the films progress. In both the power of friendship is strong and characters put their lives at risk to help one another. In both metropolis and X: the movie the pairs are torn apart because of ideals they are drawn into fighting for. If you liked the story line of one, then you would surely like the other.
