Synopsis:

When Akito Tenkawa went looking for answers about his parents' deaths, he had no idea that he'd be indoctrinated into the spaceship Nadesico not only as a cook, but also as a mecha pilot – a job he wants nothing to do with! Alongside his childhood friend Yurika, stoic Ruri, otaku Gai and other misfit crewmates, Akito and the Nadesico crew find themselves in the middle of a brutal war against both the dreaded Jovian Lizards, and the military itself, who wants the civilian ship under their control...

Aydan
Again, another space themed show, which does not focus on mecha battles, although it is a huge part of the series. This show gets great laughs and the scientific aspect adds to the show
Zadillo
Both of these shows share a lot of the same creative staff, and if you enjoy the mix of comedy and serious elements and the space setting, you should enjoy this quite a bit.

Battle Programmer Shirase

Battle Programmer Shirase

Shirase Akira is a genius hacker who has earned the nickname "Battle Programmer Shirase" (or BPS for short) for his incredible talent. From saving corporations to global security, BPS is always willing to help a hand -- for the right price. But for skills like his, money is not an option, so be sure to have specialized computer parts, sold-out tickets, or huggable life-sized cat girl posters to spare! With BPS in charge, no computer is safe! That is, if he can manage to stop being a complete slacker...

This is a bit of a strange recommendation to make, but I honestly believe if you enjoy one, you will appreciate the other.

Both have a slightly older animation style and similar characters thrust into a military role to help save the world. There are reasonably short arcs in both, that mean you can pick them up and put them down as necessary.

The flow of these shows is also quite similar, and there are some brilliant comedic moments to both. Highly recommended.

Black Heaven

Black Heaven

Meet Tanaka Oji: lead guitarist of a hard rock band in his youth, now an aging salaryman who has all but given up on his old dreams. Trudging through a boring day-to-day life, he gets a rude awakening when his musical talents are once again called upon — to save the galaxy from invaders, no less... but with age come responsibility; he has a family to look after and can’t just give up his day job, no matter how hot and blonde the reason. The time has come for a decision; will he once again try to live out his dream and rebel, or conform to the demands of society?

Black Heaven is another fun loving series that is "out of this world". Ojis guitar playing powers the most powerfull space weapon in the universe, but can he pull together the performance when it counts?

Chrome Shelled Regios

Chrome Shelled Regios

In a post-apocalyptic world overrun with great beasts called Filth Monsters, a glimmering dome protrudes from the wasteland. This is Zuellni, a mobile city unique for having a consciousness in the form of ‘electronic fairies’. Moreover, Zuellni is an academy where the next generation of powerful Heavens-Blade wielders gather to pit their strength against each other in inter-platoon competitions. Nina Antalk, military student and leader of the 17th Platoon, is intent on recruiting only the best; thus, when mysterious Layfon Alseif transfers to the academy, she instantly recognizes his abilities and decides he’s the perfect candidate to join her group. However, with a secret past that won’t leave him alone, and unknown powers beyond the academy taking an interest in Zuellni, Layfon joining the team is only the start of all their troubles.

Two completely different decades spawned two very different shows with two very similar casts. The relationships and dynamics of the groups in each is what drives the shows forwards. I think if you enjoyed one show filled with action and the occasional laughs, you will love the other.

Both of these series make fun of anime stereotypes by playing up said stereotypes in a sometimes extreme, but always amusing fashion.
