For the young women at the Lillian private school for girls, nothing is more prestigious than Rosa Sinensis, Rosa Gigantea, and Rosa Foetida, the beautiful and talented women who head the student council. Abandoned outside an orphanage when he was just a baby, Yuki is a boy with no idea where he came from or who he really is. Now in high school, the teen is plagued by odd dreams, death threats and an ability to see the negativity that dwells within people's hearts. One night after being lured into a trap, a mysterious and handsome man named Zess saves Yuki from being killed before disappearing into the night. Then, with the sudden arrival of his long-lost brother, the orphan finds himself pulled into a new world where he can not only learn about his powers and how to control them, but also becomes aware of the evils that lurk in the darkness. Can Yuki finally find the place he truly belongs, and just why is Zess so protective over the young boy?
Each of these series focus on rather bishonen characters developing non-customary relationships. In Maria, the characters work on developing relationships with their "sisters" while the relationships in Uragiri focus on people with similar souls. Although Uragiri is more fantasy based, I think that brings each series together. They are both also slow paced with similar art styles and a similar feel between the characters.
At the end of the 19th century, in a time when social classes dominate society, a woman named Emma serves as a maid for a retired governess. One fateful day, a man named William from the upper class arrives at the mansion to visit the governess, and leaves having fallen in love with the young maid herself. In a time of such prejudice, love between the classes is frowned upon; but for William and Emma, their hardships are just beginning. Can the two break free of the bonds society has forced on them, or will they succumb to the pressure and banish each other from their hearts?
Emma and MariMite share a common theme of romantic undercurrents in a social environment dominated by strict rules of decorum. The principal commandment of both series is "follow your heart's dictates, first and foremost".
