Shakugan no Shana

Shakugan no Shana

Sakai Yuuji thought he was a normal high school student, until one fateful day when time stopped. Watching in horror, he witnesses a monster devouring the "frozen" people around him; but luckily for Yuuji, he is saved by a sword-wielding red-headed girl that calls herself a "Flame Haze". The girl informs him that he has been dead for some time now and that his current self is merely a replacement for the human that he used be while alive. He is, she says, merely a torch whose life will come to an end when the blue flame in his chest ceases to burn. After this rude awakening, Yuuji realizes that he is able to see the flames of life in other "torches"; and after discovering that a friend of his is also a torch -- and her life is burning out faster than his – he gains the courage to live out the rest of his life with meaning. Will Yuuji be able to find his place in the world before he ceases to exist?

Both shows are good mix of girls kicking arse, action and plenty of grade school romance/drama topped off with a splash of comedy. Shana is definately less umm... risque when it comes to the type of relationships they'll show and there is far less fan service.

In the world of Daikuuriku, all children are born female; but once they become a young adult, they may choose which sex they will become. In this world which is at war with itself, the women of Simalacrum find themselves charged with the task of piloting the ancient machines known as Simoun in hopes of turning the tide of war. Though originally simple ceremonial machines, the most gifted of pilots can turn the glowing "ri maajon" of their rituals onto their enemies and obliterate them from the skies using these Simoun. However, it takes a special bond between two highly gifted girls to successfully pilot a Simoun. With the toll of blood and pain that these previously innocent girls are taking, how many will be able to carry on, even knowing that they are the only real thing standing between freedom and subjugation of their land?

Mai Otome and Simoun both feature a similarly clueless, light-hearted protagonist set amidst a backdrop of various houses vying for power and the protagonists being somewhat of a key to this power. The themes and the bubbly colourful animation style prevalent in both will ensure that if you liked one you will like the other.

Each of these series focus around a bunch of super powered/magic girls fighting foes in the name of their country. SW is a bit (read: A lot) more ecchi, though.

Like Mai-Otome, Witchblade has a armored female power suit action.  They both contain large organizations/conspiracy plots.  Also, while both can be a bit dark at times, each balances this out with plenty of humor.
