Both series can be visually stunning and very surreal at times. They both have an interesting and complicated plot which can keep you guessing. Plus they both have soundtracks by Yuki Kaijura which helps to create a wonderful dark atmosphere which fits perfectly for both series.
Yuki is a disaffected middle school boy who has no dreams or goals in life; in fact, the only thing he has is his diary. Writing down everything he observes and documenting every thought, the young boy uses it as an outlet for his imagination. One morning, however, Yuki wakes up to find his cell phone filled with diary entries for the next ninety days. Thinking nothing of it, he continues his morning until he begins to realize that everything on his phone is rapidly coming to pass, and it isn't just mere coincidence. Now, Yuki suddenly finds himself thrust into a survival game against other future diary owners to become the new Lord of Time.
Utena Tenjou has just arrived at the prestigious Ohtori Academy, and not long after her arrival, she receives "the mark of the rose" and becomes a duelist. She is then thrust into a series of battles with other duelists to win her friend Anthy, who is known the Rose Bride. The winning duelist will not only receive Anthy, but also the revolutionary power that she holds! Utena must now do everything she can to protect Anthy while trying to figure out the secrets behind Ohtori Academy and the Rose Bride before it’s too late.
The Adolescence of Utena and Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica are visionary takes on the darker side of magical girl anime. The visual element blends in with the depth of the message and nothing goes quite as the viewer thought it would.
Madoka is more narrative and lacks the exuberant sexuality that is such a hallmark of the Utena franchise.

If you enjoy the twist of fate type of anime this anime will greatly compliment it. The begining starts out as a traditional school life anime but slowly changes and twist untill you relize what you thought and what is happening is totally diffrent :D
WIXOSS is a card game that's popular with teenagers. Supposedly there exist "Rulig Cards," female character cards with wills of their own. Special girls can hear the voices of the Ruligs, and those who possess them are called Selectors. These Selectors have card battles in a dimension that other humans cannot access. It's said that whoever triumphs in these battles will have their wish granted. Ruko Kominato is the latest girl to find a Rulig card. She names hers Tama, and without any further explanation is thrown into her life as a Selector.
In Madoka Magica and WIXOSS, a young girl's life is suddenly changed for what she believes is the better. She makes friends, goes through new experiences, and is even promised a wish if everything goes according to plan. What she doesn't know, however, is just how deadly things will turn. If you're a fan of dark stories such as these, then both of these shows are for you.
