Otogi Zoshi

Otogi Zoshi

In the Heian period, political instability within the capital is beginning to manifest amidst widespread famine and disease. In order to stem the growing chaos, the Emperor orders Minamoto no Raikou -- a man known for his archery skills -- to reclaim the magatama, a mysterious jewel said to contain the power to save the world. But when Raikou himself becomes ill, it falls to his younger sister, Hikaru, to disguise herself and take her brother's place. In her quest for the magatama, Hikaru finds herself and her companions drawn deeper into a struggle she cannot comprehend...

Abe no Seimei and the art of Onmyoji. If that is of interest to you and I frankly cannot imagine that it's not then see both of these. There are a few other anime which feature Abe no Seimei, but these two are wonderful. Abe no Seimei is the only thing linking these two, but he is an amazing character and worth further study. As a side note the movie Onmyoji and its sequel Onmyoji 2 are also worth viewing.

Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt

Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt

When there's something strange in your neighborhood, who ya gonna call? No, not the Ghostbusters. Call on Panty & Stocking, the two fallen angels Heaven-sent to clear the surface world of Ghosts – creatures spawned from mortals who met gruesome deaths. At least, that's what they'd like you to think. In reality, they're gun-toting, sword-wielding femmes fatales who lay waste not only to the evil of Daten City, but to all its bachelors and candy treats too. With a healthy dollop of collateral damage and full-frontal nudity, they always manage to save the day. If they can be bothered, that is...

Most everyone has heard of Gainax's Panty & Stocking, but less well-known is its predeccessor, Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi. Fans of either show would do well to look into the other: both are madcap comedies heavily influenced by Western animation, with elasticated animation styles. Both share a similar sense of crass humour and elements of ecchi that are played to the point of parodic. In short, Panty and Stocking owe a lot to Abenobasi, and if you like one, you'll more than likely find the other worthwhile.

Paranoia Agent

Paranoia Agent

In the streets of Tokyo, a new menace has surfaced: Shounen Bat, a young boy who wears golden roller skates and a baseball cap, and likes to whack people on the head with a golden baseball bat. These seemingly unconnected and random attacks soon become a police investigation... but after all is said and done, is there a pattern to this chaos?

Both have some strange realities passing by with a lot of weird features happening in the background. Paranoia Agent is a complexer story, but both work out that weirdness in a simular way nontheless.

Ping Pong Club

Ping Pong Club

At Ina Middle School, the boys’ Ping Pong Club is seen as more of a joking matter than something worth the school's budget. It doesn't help that they are constantly being outdone by the girls' team and their fiery-tempered coach, as well the fact that most of the boys on the team care more about their ding dongs than their ping pongs! In a desperate attempt to motivate the team, the boys' coach introduces a hot-bodied female manager, who might just bring a sexual tension to the team that could work to their advantage. But can these hopeless boys improve their game enough to emerge victorious at the upcoming tournament and win the prize she's willing to give?

Wild, crazy, can't tell what's gonna be shown next. Both Abenobashi and Ping Pong Club offer situational comedy that is sometimes over the top but not as overly offensive as some fanservice type shows. Abenobashi offers more of a solid storyline, but the comedic style of both shows can be considered similar.

Serial Experiments Lain

Serial Experiments Lain

"I have only abandoned my body, I still live here" - are the words emailed to friends of Chisa, several days after her death by suicide. As Lain delves deeper into the world of the "Wired" (also known as the internet), the line between it and reality becomes more and more unclear. Close the world, open the nExt.

Lain and Abenobashi Mahou Shoutengai can be catogarized under "weird anime", though Lain has a much deeper story and hardly any comedy. Abenobashi on the other hand is much more homorous. If you like something funnier than Lain, check Abenobashi out. If you like something deeper, check out Lain.
