Magical Pokan is seeing a resurgence of interest after a particularly well animated hentai game was released last week focusing on Liru. So, in the interest of understanding the source of this hentai, I decided to take a look at Magical Pokan, if only because Liru is pretty much the cutest animal girl I've ever seen.

Magical Pokan is a confusing show that manages the humorlessness of a child's slice-of-life program with an occasionally jarring assault of perverse or borderline hentai humor. It's the tale of a werewolf, magician, vampire, and cyborg who live together in a tree and try to acclimate to human life. It's an interesting, cute concept that utilizes the adorable factor to the fullest and will be remembered for, if anything, the well-defined and unique cast.

Why a four if I enjoyed the characters so much? Well, the anime as a whole suffers from a lot of issues. Foremost is the cheapness of it all. The animation isn't great, there's a constant reuse of content, the music isn't very good. It's obvious this was made as cheaply as possible to make a quick buck.

This wouldn't be quite as much of an issue if the show was actually funny. The biggest problem I had with Magical Pokan was that it was rarely humorous. The only times I did chuckle were the out-of-left-field sexual jokes that dot an otherwise fairly tame and innocent anime. Many episodes exclude the overt sexual humor and go instead for a kid-friendly approach. It's because of this shift in comedy style that I don't know who the target audience was meant to be or what Magical Pokan was trying to succeed. Because as an ecchi or hentai, it does too little and as a friendly comedy, it crosses the line. I guess it's meant to appeal to teenage guys but because of the genericism and humorlessness of much of the show, I don't know that it appeals there.

There's little to talk about with this anime. Magical Pokan is cute but has nothing else going for it aside from that.

Where is the #$%@()&^ story!
That is what I yelled when I finished this series. I got trolled from the opening video to expect some sort of comedy going psycho along the way. It was back in the day when the community in my country had no idea of what a series would be about and Elfen Lied was on its peak. So yeah, watching the intro made me think it would be something similar.

So this is a series about four princesses from some magic kingdom coming to the human realm. Why? Just for the heck of it. They are also based on famous monsters. Why? Just for the heck of it. They also appear in the opening to be brutally tortured and doing lesbo stuff. Why? Just for luring you to keep watching in hopes of seeing that. And guess what, nothing happens. There is no story!!! ARGH!!!

Anyways, I watched this with wrong expectations as the intro made me think it wasn’t just another storyless gag comedy. There is no actual plot in this, just short comedic sketches around the girls making mistakes and other silly stuff around otherwise mundane aspects of human civilization. As far as story goes, there is none. Even the premise is nothing but a poor excuse. A trolling one, aimed at making you laugh at how it suckered you into thinking it would be Elfen Lied jr. Ok, it worked. But man, was I pissed. Where is the #$%@()&^ story! Each segment has its own completion but there is no objective in it. Other than comedy that is. Sorry, I’m not going easy on it for being a comedy.

The animation is simple yet cute and artsy at times. Bright colors, cute character figures and occasionally erotic humor TM just for the heck of it. The opening and ending clips are particularly memorable as they are nothing but typical. The intro is like that of a psychedelic torture/lesbo hentai, while the ending is a weird mix of 3D paper-toys and the song is performed as if it’s karaoke or something. Plus, it is different each time! Nice going there. The animation is otherwise low on fluent movements or cinematics. It still does a great job at pointing out the jokes with simple yet successful animation style.

The sound is equally good for the same reasons. The dialogues are very funny since the girls are more dense than solid rock, while the intro and ending songs are actually memorable and likable thanks to the aforementioned trolling/artsy attitude.

The characters are archetypes that don’t develop in any way. They are very funny and do have distinctive (albeit stereotypical) behaviors. They end up being good just for being a parody of the respective monsters they are based on. But that is as far as it goes. They are not exactly memorable or special. Some sort of objective in the story could help at that but no; you get squat.

I don’t find particularly high replay value in this series and it sure has no historical value either. Storyless comedies tend to be good only as one-timers and get forgotten as soon as the next similar show pops up but some jokes are good to watch a second time. But only a second and only some.

Ok, it is very funny even if I hated how I was trolled hard by the intro. The stories are shot and the jokes come one right after another, while the erotic humor and the dense characters really don’t allow you to get bored right away.

In other news, a few years after I watched this, I came to read a comedic loli hentai, titled Petit Roid 3. It had the same archetypical characters in it and equally zany humor. So my raeg went away as I at least got to read something very close to what I expected from this anime. And they lived happily ever after… even if they had no objective.

Ah yes.A Vampire, a werewolf,a witch and an android. What more could you possible want from an anime.Although I myself would prefer to watch something like this as an action anime where all the characters are some crazy, overpowered, badass characters (especially the werewolf),but I am not really complaining as this turns out to be a comedy. In fact, already at the beginning of the anime,I fell in love with all the main characters (except for the android). So if you are looking for something crazy, random, fun, interesting and filled with panty shots anime, you have come to the right place.

Well the story is based on Liru (the werewolf),Pachira (the vampire),Uma (the witch) and Aiko (the android) who have come to the human world and are trying to fit in it.And except for a few times, they really do.The 4 heroines of the anime often find themselves in a strange situation, competing with each other or fighting over a man.
The first episode doesn't tell much about their origins, but it turn out that a researcher of ''creatures of the underworld'' named Dr. K-Ko and her assistant Hongo have been trying to get their hands on one of these creatures for a long time now and are trying to expose them to the world. And beyond their expectations, they don't catch just one of these creatures in a single night, but instead all three of them. The only one who wasn't cough in a trap was Uma,becouse it is scientifically proved that witches don't exist.Ironically enough Uma can't use her spells very well, but somehow manages to free them. From that point on the randomness of this anime just reaches its maximum, till the end of the episodes. The episodes are separated in two halves, each telling a completely different story or finishing the previous. So if you get bored of something you might skip,or if you haven't watched an episode and directly watch the next one,you won't be missing anything from the plot of the story.I myself enjoyed every part of this anime and had a great laugh, although I wish it had an ending for it just ended like there is going to be a bunch of more episodes.

The animation is great for its time, but I think they could have done better at some point, but I don't think that's really a problem. Now only if those animated characters could become real.Hmm...

The sound is pretty good and the voice acting is very well done, with fitting voices to the characters themselves. The opening is very well made, but I think they could have done better with the ending.

The best part of this anime is definitely the characters. They all are pretty different, just like the difference in their species.
Liru,as being my favorite of the bunch, can offend be found somewhere outside playing (especially of its raining)at a meat shop or sleeping. She likes wild man, having fun and meat the most. But I don't get why her werewolf form looks like a cute little dog,or even as some people say,a cute looking cat.
Pachira, being a vampire and all, looks often for pray, thus sucking its prays blood out and turning it into a slave (but I think that never really happend). She likes handsome, dignified man with delicious blood.Sun can't hurt her,but she still wears a box on her head to protect herself.
Uma is always bright, lighthearted, careless and funny. She reads manga and doesn't have a ideal man for her dreams. Her fails in magic often lead to a very good view for sore eyes and sure mix up the other characters in an awkward situation as well.
And Aiko likes to cook,be shy and other random stuff. She is looking for a human body,so that she can be a human once and for all.

I wish there were more episodes(except for the 3 OVAS),but all good things must come to an end sooner or later. The anime is pretty decent and if you are looking for fun, entertainment and for an interesting comedy, then don't hesitate to watch Magical Pokan!
