If you liked the swordsplay in Hakkenden, im sure you'll the Kenshin OVAs. This anime has a great storyline and gives you a background look into how Kenshin became the legendary Hitokiri Battosai. It follows his past from him being a small child learning the ways of the sword, to the end of the meiji era. This anime features: -A great story line that ,although fictional, is historically correct. -A great OST, really breathtaking music. -Superb animation, but some scenes might not suit younger viewers.

Trust, loyalty, friendship, love and fate are all tested in both Samurai X and The Hakkenden. Both are stories based in feudal times, using of swords and hearts, yet both have a subtle way of telling grand stories without "leaving anything out." Rich in dialogue, emotionally impacting and visually interesting (often times disturbing), both offer a feeling of solidity. Being visually different, The Hakkenden adopts its own style of animation often varying itself and limited use of color which imo makes it as visually satisfying as Samurai X which uses crisp animation and the contrasting of color. The Hakkenden does have a larger character base in comparison to Samurai X, but the emphasis is only on a few, making character development for both fluid and effortless.

Probably one of the closest series to the Kenshin OVA you will find. Very good action, plot, and character development, coupled with a dark story and plenty of violence.

Samurai 7

Samurai 7 main image

In an age when samurai enhanced their bodies mechanically, a great war broke out. After the war's end, these "Bandits" (having become mere robbers) have lost their samurai code and now rob villages for their rice and women. The peasants of Kanna Village are filled with despair and agree to hire some samurai to retaliate, but with only rice in their food stores and no money to offer, it seems that time is running out. Now, the villagers must set out to look for samurai willing to accept such a deal -- but are there still such men that abide by the samurai code, and protect the weak?

Both series start in with plot development from the start. Both have a unique pacing that is relaxed though there is most definitely action. Atmosphere and mood are vital elements to both shows, which can affect pacing. Character development is rich and it is very easy to follow, though there are a lot of characters. Likable characters are available from the start, and the number of characters to chose from adds to the dynamic of identification with more than one character. Humor is used as a way to offset some of the deep "struggles" in the show but used appropriately. Both take their time in showing the viewer in its "own time" what is to be shown but the pacing is comfortable once settled into. What i found most enjoyable about the shows was that they are more "sophisticated" in that they don't hold the viewer's hand while not seemingly over anyone's head. Both are stories about real people struggling with real situations depending on each other for all forms of survival while attempting to overcome their own personal shortcomings.

Well, Samurai 7 IS a modern version of Hakkenden, so if you like one you're bound to like the other. Great samurai action ahead!

Both The Hakkenden (Legend of the Dog Warriors) and NTHT have the common element of being a psychological study of people during difficult times and struggles against foes both seen and unseen. Trust, love, faith and hope are explored by the main characters of both series as are some of the darker sides of humanity. The Hakkenden is based on legend told in classical form and NTHT is told in another place and time, allowing the stories to be told with great emotional impact and visual imagery while the viewer can indulge in their identification w/ the characters that both elicit while watching at a safe distance.

If you liked the action and the strange mythology that was put into Hakkenden, you'd like Ninja Scroll. It's a bit more violent, but it has a lot of mythical characters and ideas.

Samurai Deeper Kyo is a series that deals with the same time period as Hakkenden, and also Kyo has a "split" personality, but instead of it being a dog, he is an evil Demon Eyes Kyo. It's still a similar era anime, so if you liked one give the other a try.
