Freedom

Freedom

It is the year 2267, and all that is left of humanity now lives in the 'Eden colony', a domed metropolis on the moon. Earth has long since been abandoned after a cataclysm left it uninhabitable... or so the inhabitants of Eden are led to believe. But when a young boy named Takeru discovers a photograph of a girl which appears to have been taken on Earth, he begins to doubt that this is the case. With the help of his friends, Takeru decides to visit Earth in search of the girl; despite the fact that it is against the strict laws of the colony and despite not knowing what awaits him there...

The idea of exploring lost worlds and rediscovering the past is a theme in both of these, though you can expect a much tighter, less commercial and more beautiful treatment in Laputa.

Another Ghibli production with the same high quality to it. Well made up characters, story and enviroments. Both are good non-classical fantasy movies.

InuYasha

InuYasha

Now, along with Miroku the priest, Sango the demon hunter, and Shippou the mischievious fox-demon, they must set out to find the Shikon shards and defeat the evils of the demon Naraku.

InuYasha The Movie 4: Fire on the Mystic Island
  • Movie (1 ep x 88 min)
  • 2004

Fifty years ago, Inuyasha and Kikyo discovered the legendary Horai Island – a place which only appears out of the mists every few decades. During that time, they found several half-demon children who were subject to the demonic rule of the Four War Gods, but had to leave before they could do anything about the situation. In “modern” feudal times, the island reappears and one of the children escapes, seeking out Inuyasha to rescue them all from the Four War Gods. Can Inuyasha liberate the children with the help of the Tetsusaiga, before the island once again disappears into the mists?

I thought it was very interesting how both Inuyasha Movie 4 and Laputa feature hidden islands and something strange and magical about each of them.  The main characters have to work together to overcome the powers that the island holds and the magic the island has.

I'm not sure how odd this recommendation may be, but I do think these shows have similar aspects. Both have boy/girl duos that you can't help but like. The way they both watch out for each other as they try to navigate a growingly more complex situation in an already complicated setting. If you liked one of these shows take a chance on the other.
