Detroit Metal City

Detroit Metal City
  • OVA (12 eps x 13 min)
  • 2008

Negishi Souichi always dreamed of joining a trendy pop band, so that he could perform music like that of his idol, Kahimi Karie. In order to realize his dream, he decided to leave the country side and his loving parents to study in Tokyo. And after graduating, he does manage to join a band... but not the kind he was expecting! As lead singer of the death metal band Detroit Metal City, under the stage name Krauser II, he is made to perform loud songs filled with obscene lyrics - a far cry from the songs he used to write in school. But despite the fact that Negishi hates DMC's music, the Krauser side of him will do anything to put on a good show for his fans... even if it means making Negishi's life a misery!

Most people will probably look at this recommendation and think I've finally lost it. It did take a while to decide on a series that was anything like DMC, but I think KnJ steps up quite nicely. The stories are nothing alike, the characters are extremely different....

However, both shows rely heavily on the "WTF!" factor, going for in your face shock tactics. Quite frequently I found myself completely speechless, thinking "did they really just say that...?" for both of these shows. The comedy is very dark, and will appeal to the same kind of viewer who is not easily offended by some taboo subjects.

So if you're looking for something a little different to the norm, and you don't mind watching behind closed doors, I highly recommend both of these shows.

Gunslinger Girl

Gunslinger Girl

Henrietta is a young girl who works for a "welfare group" that does the government's dirty work. Cybernetically-enhanced and specially-trained, she is one of a group of elite hit-girls, remorseless killers with no memories of their past. Jose, her partner, has taken care of her since she was brought into the organization following the murder of her family, and struggles between his affection for her, and his opposing duty to his employer. But, time is running out.. for with each bullet they fire, Henrietta and the other girls lose a little more of their humanity.

Both Kodomo no Jikan and Gunslnger Girl deal heavily with the turmoil of adolescence under strange circumstances, taking care to honestly approach the situations and express the emotions of the characters reasonably. Kodomo no Jikan uses perverse comedy as its medium of expression while Gunslinger Girl uses violence, but both give an intelligent, often dark, and often harsh view of innocence and adolescence in a way that is not usually expressed.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni

Maebara Keiichi, an ordinary high-school boy, has transferred to a new school in Hinamizawa, a small rural village. At the outset everything seems peaceful and Keiichi becomes friends with a nice group of schoolgirls with whom he spends many idle summer afternoons. Suddenly violence encroaches upon the blissful peace of the village and Keiichi becomes entangled in an endless cycle of fear and death. The inconsistent, but inevitable horrors of Hinamizawa are told and retold becoming an endless and inescapable nightmare of insanity. Will it end even if the mystery of Hinamizawa is solved?

AnarchicQ

While Higurashi is violent and Komodo no Jikan is sexual, both have the feeling of "How could a cute little kid even think that let alone do it?!" If twisted kids engaging in screwed up actions intrigues you, you'll like both anime.

Kanokon

Kanokon

The timid, virginal Kouta is a new student at Kunpo High School; and while others in his situation might be a wallflower forever, Kouta has no such luck – he has attracted the attention of the busty Chizuru, who happens to be a fox deity! However, Kouta’s misfortunes don’t stop there; he’s also pursued by Nozomu, a wolf deity. Between being molested, propositioned, having his face shoved between mammoth breasts or witnessing endless panty shots, Kouta must also attempt to maintain his studies – even though all Chizuru and Nozomu want is to be the one to deflower him first!

Kanokon and Kodomo no Jikan both have light-hearted ecchi strewn thoroughout. Both are hilarious, and have a heavy focus on the corrupted girl seducing the innocent virgin guy. They each also include young or young-appearing characters undergoing acts of perversion and light-hearted seduction while the main guy tries to resist because of his ever-wavering moral fortitude.

Major differences include switches in the age differences between the main male and main female(s); Kanokon has supernatural aspects, while Kodomo is realistic; and in Kanokon, the main male actually has two females vying for his affection, one who is older than him and one who is younger.

Lotte no Omocha!

Lotte no Omocha!

Lotte, the princess of Ygvarland, hates men - a fact that ordinarily wouldn't be a problem given she's just a child. There's just one issue: the girl is a succubus that must suck the life seed from the male species or die! Now approaching adulthood, Lotte must learn to tolerate the opposite sex, but her royal highness won't have any of it. That is, until Judith, the girl's lady-in-waiting, brings Lotte a human boy to the demon world. This unfortunate young man, Naoya, must now open the princess's heart to his gender, but as caring and considerate as he may be, he'll certainly have his work cut out for him!

Both shows try to find humor in questionable subject matter. Normally, descriptions like "10-year old succubus" or "perverted third graders" isn't the kind of thing you'd look for in a comedy, but they both do a good job of being funny in uncomfortable situtations. Kodomo no Jikan tends to be more serious at times, but they both seem to basically be cute stories. If you like one, you'll like the other.
