Earthian

Earthian

For many generations, angels have watched over the keepers of Earth, monitoring their progress, achievements, and failures. Chihaya, a positive-checker cursed with black wings, must report the good deeds of these Earthians to Eden, while Kagetsuya, his partner and a negative-checker must pay attention to man’s ill actions. What starts as simple observatory assignment leads to the heavenly duo becoming involved in a sinister operation of biomechanical proportions, which may end up destroying the Earth and all its children for good!

It's fairly creepy how similar Key and Earthian actually are. It wouldn't be easy to explain why without spoiling parts of both series, so lets just say that plot-wise, they match quite well. Both are quite dark once you get down to it, though might be overlooked for the older animation style.

Hand Maid May

Hand Maid May

One day he receives May, a hand sized cyberdoll, in a package from Cyberdyne Co. as a revenge tactic planted in a CD from his rival. With a little help from May to clean up his act, he may even be able to win over the heart of Kasumi, his landlord's daughter.

More of the same as Mahoromatic. A lot more comedic, but you have a teeny robot chick/human romance, and lots of saucy and interesting characters. Watch it and have fun already!

Mahoromatic

Mahoromatic

She cooks, she cleans, and is a lethal fighting machine. Mahoromatic, former Vesper battle android, has chosen to give up her weapons, extending her remaining life from 37 to 398 days. As Misato Suguru's maid, she fights battles of another sort, fending off an amorous teacher on one hand, ecchi magazines on the other. Can Mahoro save Suguru's innocence?

Mahoromatic is a bit more over the top than Key, but if its robot girl action/Dromedy you seek, then look no further. And yes its by Gainax, but its good all the same.

Red Garden

Red Garden

Four students of the same age have nothing in common except that they attend the same elite New York City school. Kate, Rose, Clare and Rachel all belong to different cliques and hardly notice each other's existence. Then one day they gain something in common, something very important, something mysterious. They find themselves drawn together by the death of a fellow student and the secret of their own missing memories. Suddenly they are thrown into a world of hidden warfare on the city streets and are caught up in secrets which would not be believed by others. These four all have their own problems to struggle with, things that seem more important than such strange conflicts. Can they escape from this fate? The only thing they know is that despite coming from four different worlds they now have to rely on each other or die without a hope.

If you like anime with a plotline that is obscure and cryptic, and only comes clear over time, while retaining a strong sense of characterization, then you'll be happy to know that these are the common traits shared by Key the Metal Idol and Red Garden. Another feature of both these anime is a nebulous and threatening enemy which proves difficult, if not impossible, to get a grip on, let alone defeat.

Saikano

Saikano

In the not-so-distant future, mankind is at war with itself. The lives of Chise and Shuu are torn apart when Chise is chosen to become the ultimate weapon to fight for Japan against their enemies. Death, sadness, and the hardships of love accompany Sai Kano in its grim look at war and its consequences.

Saishuheiki Kanojo and Key the Metal Idol are both frail, beutiful stories with dark frame. There are similarities in animation, though that isn't exactly identical. Still, the animation and colours of both series give one the same kind of feeling.
