Fleeing to his Grandfather's nearby sea rig, Kappei is knocked into the water and is rescued by a giant spaceship piloted by his grandparents. Before he can figure out what is going on, he finds himself in the mighty Zam-bird, fighting against the monster that attacked him - a mecha-boost of the planet-destroying Gaizok! Kappei isn't the only one in his family who ends up with a giant robot, though; his cousin Uchuta pilots the Zambull and Keiko pilots the Zambase. Together, the three of them can transform into the Invincible Superman Zambot 3!

The only man aware of Dr. Hell's plan is Dr. Kabuto, a pioneer in new energy sources. Super robot of the 70s, one shouldn't need to tell anything else if you were a children back in the days.
If you missed it for any reason (including being born after the golden age of the super robot genre), there you have the basis of your animefanhood :)!!!
Mazinger Z and Zanbot 3 are more than old school, cheesy mecha series with transformation series, monsters of the week and attacks where the pilots have to yell out the name of in order to work (granted, they both have all of these).
On top of that, there are more similarities. A family which ends up with a giant robot. A villian who is after world domination, but attacks Japan to the exclusion of the rest of the world because the one thing that could defeat them is there. A pissed off populace because, let's face it, you can only stand to have your city destroyed so many times.
Both series also have the subtext of a cocky young pilot, who goes from gung-ho can't be wrong, to learning what it means to be a hero and that actions have consequences.
If you enjoyed Mazinger Z, you will also like Invincible Superman Zanbot 3 and vice versa.
Professor Saotome is finishing up his lifelong Getter project: a series of space exploration ships powered by Getter rays from the sun. These ships are able to combine into three different robot forms called Getter Robo. At the same time, King Gora of the underground Dinosaur Empire has completed his mechasaurus project and begins his plans for world domination! Can Getter Robo’s pilots Ryoma, Hayato and Musashi defend the earth from the forces of the Dinosaur Empire, even with the help of the lovely Michiru from the Command Ship?
Getter Robo and Invincible Superman Zanbot 3 are both examples of the '70s era mecha series, where names are long and epic, all robots seem to combine and transform, and a group of stalwart kids must defeat some recently awakened evil that threatens to consume the planet. Constantly challenged by increasingly difficult foes, the heroes in each grow along with them.
If you recall either one of these, and wish for some nostalgic value, or simply enjoy old mecha series, you should take a look at the other series.

While you might initially think a recommendation between Invincible Superman Zanbot 3 and Mobile Suit Gundam SEED would be about giant robots fighting with other giant robots, the actual important similarities go beyond that. The main important similarity between the series involves the struggle for freedom and the unfortunate sacrifices of war. The main characters in both these series struggle with the dilemmas presented by the responsibilities they are burdened with.
If you recognized and liked this fact in Zanbot 3, take a look at Gundam SEED.
However, if you just like giant robots, feel free to atch Gundam SEED anyway.
