If you want to see another anime that uses a lot of special powers but doesn't go overboard with them and keeps a very solid story, Scryed, just like the HxH OVA, is right up your alley!
Jubei Kibagami is just a wandering swordsman minding his own business... until fate lands him in the middle of a battle with the terrifying Devils of Kimon! Now the fate of all of Japan lies in the hands of a vagabond samurai, a deadly female ninja and a perverted old monk as they take on an enemy who is, literally, immortal.
In the world of underground fighting, there is no time limit, no referee, and no ban of technique, not even murderous ones. This is the underground world that Baki, the young champion fighter must fight in to show the world how strong he can be. Only by challenging and accepting the strongest opponents from the world can he hope that one day he can overcome his greatest opponent of all, his father.
Both series are rather dark and concentrate mostly on fighting. Both main characters train in order to have their revange, the thing that makes them stand out is definitelly their atmosphere and fighting sequences. Some of them are really memmorable and you will need weeks to forget them. If you liked one you should like the other.
The war between the monarchical Galactic Empire and the democratic Free Planets Alliance has raged ceaselessly across the galaxy for over a century, with the fleets of both powers having fought countless battles. Currently the conflict revolves around the strategic Iserlohn Corridor, one of only two passages of space through which the two forces can access each other. Here the Empire has built the nigh-impregnable Iserlohn Fortress, whose deadly weaponry has thwarted repeated efforts by the Alliance to capture her. Phezzan, a neutral mercantile state, controls the other corridor. The long war has resulted in an indecisive stalemate, but there are two men from the two worlds who will change everything: Yang Wenli, a gifted strategist from the Alliance who wants nothing more than to retire and be a historian; and Reinhard von Lohengramm, a man from the Empire whose ambition knows no bounds. Their loves, struggles, triumphs and failures play across an interstellar stage of intrigue, war and death.
If you liked this Hunter X Hunter OVA because you liked how well tactics and analyzing was done, I bet you will also like Legend of the Galactic Heroes.
Eventough the concept is totally different but battle tactics, strategies and analyzes are top of the class.
