Oblivion Island isn't nearly as stunning, visually, as Welcome to the Space Show, but both are endearing and spectacular trips into a fantasy world that is detailed and incredible. Please check out one if you liked the other.
Welcome to THE SPACE SHOW and Oblivion Island feature children going off on an adventure to another world, meeting weird creatures, travelling on trains, and generally getting into trouble.
In addition to that, both movies are amongst the most creatively visual features to appear in anime for many years.
These recent childrens movies both feature adolescent protagonists adventuring in fantastic settings. They have strong animation and fast moving plots that appeal to more mature viewers as well as children.
Alice is a preteen girl who believes in magic, much to the dismay of her parents and peers. But when she finds herself transported into a dreamlike world filled with magic, forest sprites, and witches, she finds out that magic is sometimes not all it’s cracked up to be. The witches of this world must capture forest sprites for use in casting their spells, and magical hierarchy dictates that those at the bottom must compete to get to the top. Dream or not, Alice must use her positive attitude to show these witches that magic should be used to spread happiness, first and foremost!
Both of the anime feature a young girl being dumped into a magical realm full ot bizarre creatures. Both girls search for an item given to them by their parents, an item with great power in the magical realm. Along the way, they make friends and learn about the power within themselves.
In the year 2047, the invaders came without warning, annihilating most of humanity in days. And while the survivors banded together to form a new world government to combat the threat, by 2053, mankind's outlook is bleak. Now, in a final desperate attack, hope lies only with a soldier who lost his father in the invasion, and a weapon more powerful than belief.
Both are examples of 3D CG anime, but in comparitive terms Oblivion Island is by far and away the better movie.
Chihiro and her family are on their way to their new home, when they discover an abandoned amusement park. After Chihiro's family mysteriously turn into pigs, she is thrown into a surreal world of magic and fantasy. Join her as she struggles to survive in the bathhouse of the gods, ruled by an evil witch who has stolen not only her name, but her way back to the real world.
Both anime involve a young female protagonist suddenly being dropped into a strange new world of new customs and strange creatures.
