Elfen Lied as well as Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni are both very violent series. For a small pause from the bloodshed and murders, Higurashi special and Elfen Lied OVA offer a little more relaxed depiction of events. The cheery chores and games among good friends are highlighted, although the dark athmosphere is still hovering in the background...
Both are adaptations of visual novels where a town has a big mystery involving cults, which are gradually revealed as the series progresses and involve seemingly cute teens/tweens involved in some serious (and gory) situations. The rec includes all the seasons of Higurashi, not just the first.
